Want to know more about our travel insurance for Europe?

Get answers to your top questions about our travel insurance for Europe.

In most cases, U.S. citizens are not required to purchase travel insurance in order to visit Europe for vacation. However, if you are applying for a Schengen visa — which is necessary for longer stays or certain types of travel — travel insurance is mandatory. To qualify, your policy must include at least €30,000 (about the same in U.S. dollars) in coverage for emergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, and repatriation.

Because entry rules and visa requirements can vary by country and type of trip, the best way to confirm if travel insurance is required is to check with the official embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit. If you are already a policyholder, you have access to our Travel On app, where you can check the entry requirements for your chosen destination(s).

Even when it’s not a requirement, we always recommend purchasing travel insurance for Europe. Coverage can help protect you from unexpected costs related to medical emergencies, flight delays, trip interruptions, or lost baggage — giving you financial protection as you travel.

Credit card travel insurance may include some protections, but it often has limits on medical coverage — and in many cases, it does not cover large hospital bills, medical evacuation, or repatriation abroad. Since medical care for non-residents in Europe can be costly, relying only on your credit card may leave you responsible for significant expenses.

Purchasing comprehensive travel insurance for Europe helps ensure you have coverage that meets common needs like emergency treatment, baggage loss, trip cancellation, and travel delay.

The cost of travel insurance for Europe depends on several factors, including your age, trip length, total trip cost, and the type of plan you choose. Adding optional upgrades — like adventure activity coverage, rental car protection, or cancel for any reason — can also affect the price.

The easiest way to see your exact cost is to get a personalized quote online in seconds

You can. Our base plans include coverage for certain lower-risk activities such as hiking, cycling, or kayaking. If you’re planning to ski in the Alps, go whitewater rafting in Slovenia, or try paragliding in the Dolomites, you’ll need to add our adventure activities upgrade to your Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, or Travel Med Go plan.

Without this upgrade, some higher-risk activities may be excluded. With it, you’ll have coverage that’s built to support the kind of adventures Europe is known for.

It can. Our travel insurance can apply to all your destinations across Europe — unless you visit one of our blocked destinations.

When you get a quote, list your destination as “Europe” if you’ll be in the region for the entire trip. You can also enter the country where you’ll spend the most time. For example, if you plan to spend a week in France and a few days in Spain, select France as your destination when completing your quote.

When you purchase our coverage, you’ll have access to the Travel On app, which provides real-time safety alerts tailored to your location anywhere in Europe. From transportation disruptions to health advisories, the app helps you stay informed and connected with tap-to-call travel assistance — so you can focus on enjoying your trip instead of worrying about the unexpected.

It’s also a good idea to enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) before your departure. This way, you’ll receive official safety notifications during your travels across the continent.

You can. Our rental car damage upgrade is available with our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans. It can help reimburse eligible costs if your rental car is damaged because of theft, collision, fire, or other covered incidents while driving through Europe, whether that’s along Italy’s Amalfi Coast, Germany’s Romantic Road, or Greek island roads.

Planning to rent a scooter, motorcycle, or specialty vehicle? Keep in mind that the rental car damage upgrade only applies to standard cars, so you’ll want to review your options carefully when you get a quote.

You can. Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans include trip cancellation coverage if you need to cancel for specific covered reasons, such as illness, injury, or severe weather events. Full details about eligible cancellation reasons are listed in your plan’s Description of Coverage (DoC).

Looking for more flexibility? With our Ultimate plan’s optional cancel for any reason* upgrade, you can cancel your Europe trip for any reason up to two days before departure and receive reimbursement of up to 75% of your insured, prepaid costs.

To qualify for this upgrade, you’ll need to:

  • Purchase it within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Purchase it at least 31 days before departure.
  • Insure the full cost of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses (up to $10,000 per person).

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

You can. Europe is home to some of the world’s most popular cruises — from river journeys along the Danube or Rhine to ocean sailings through the Mediterranean or Baltic.

Our travel insurance offers coverage for cruises, helping protect you against unexpected cancellations, interruptions, or even missed departures for covered reasons.

Whether you’re exploring historic ports in Greece, drifting past castles in Germany, or visiting Nordic capitals by sea, cruise travel insurance can help keep your plans on course.

It's best to purchase travel insurance shortly after you make your first booking — whether that’s a flight to Paris, a rail pass across multiple countries, or a Mediterranean cruise.

Buying early can make you eligible for time-sensitive benefits, such as a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver or coverage if your trip is canceled for a covered reason. The sooner you buy, the more protection you’ll have in place before your trip begins.

You can. Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions in Europe may be available if you qualify for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, which is offered with our Ultimate plan.

To be eligible, you’ll need to:

  • Purchase your plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Insure 100% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs.
  • Be medically able to travel at the time of purchase.

This option can be especially helpful if you’re managing ongoing health needs while traveling across Europe.

Our plans may provide coverage for terrorist incidents under trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits. To be eligible, the incident must occur in a city that's:

  • Listed on your itinerary
  • Within five miles of your scheduled destination
  • Within 30 days of your scheduled arrival — or during your trip

In those cases, you may be eligible for certain expenses if your plans are disrupted.

It’s important to note that war and acts of war are excluded from all our travel insurance plans. We also don’t provide coverage for civil unrest, riots, or insurrections.

If you want the flexibility to cancel because of war, civil unrest, or terrorism — or any other reason — you may be eligible with our cancel for any reason upgrade*, offered on the Ultimate plan, which can reimburse up to 75% of insured trip costs if purchased and used within the required timeframes.

Since rules and exclusions vary, we recommend reviewing your Description of Coverage (DoC) when you get a quote. You can also stay informed while abroad with our Travel On app, which provides real-time safety alerts and tap-to-call assistance if a terrorist incident occurs during your trip.
