Want to know more about our travel insurance for Germany?

Get our answers to your top questions about Germany travel insurance.

If you’re visiting Germany for less than 90 days, you won’t need a Schengen visa if you’re a U.S. citizen. However, if you plan to stay in Germany beyond 90 days, you’ll need a Schengen visa — and to get one, you’ll need to show proof of sufficient travel medical insurance for Germany.

What’s a Schengen visa? It’s a visa that guarantees seamless short-term movement for Americans traveling between countries in the “Schengen Zone”, which Germany is part of (along with many other European countries!). A Schengen visa mandates tourists much have travel medical insurance for Germany that includes at least €30,000 (close to the same amount in dollars) in emergency medical expenses and evacuation coverage.

We can help if you need travel insurance for your Schengen visa: Our Ultimate plan is available for trips up to 180 days in length and surpasses the travel insurance requirement, offering $250,000 in emergency medical benefits and $1,000,000 for emergency evacuation and repatriation. It offers everything you need (and more) to take Schengen paperwork hurdles — and travel obstacles — in your stride.

Tip: Make sure to check the U.S. State Department's guide for travel to the Schengen area when planning extended trips.

Germany is known for being a generally safe and welcoming destination, but staying updated can’t hurt!

With a Travelex policy, you can download our Travel On app for real-time updates on safety risks, plus other helpful resources.

It’s also a good idea to check the U.S. Department of State for Germany's travel advisory level and sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for travel alerts and advice.

No matter how you travel, unexpected issues can come up — and leave you with unplanned expenses. Whether it’s a last-minute flight change or a surprising (and not-so-graceful) slip on the deck of a Rhine cruise, our Germany travel insurance has your back, so little detours don’t throw your entire adventure off course.

You can! Whether you're meandering through Bavaria's breathtaking scenic routes or gliding along the picturesque roads of the Harz Mountains, our rental car damage upgrade can ride alongside you.

This optional upgrade is available with our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans and can help safeguard you financially in case of eligible incidents like accidents or theft, allowing you to focus on enjoying the ride.

Have a moped or motorcycle in mind? This upgrade is designed only for standard rental cars, so you won’t have coverage if you rent a different vehicle.

Sure thing! If you’re enjoying the Danube River or docking at Hamburg’s bustling ports, our coverage extends to cruise-specific challenges — from sea-sick stops at local medical offices to itinerary shifts.

Check out our cruise travel insurance to discover the benefits of setting sail with trip protection.

Our plans offer coverage for a variety of activities, from hiking the Black Forest trails to kayaking along the Rhine River.

If you’re into more daring stuff like paragliding the Wallberg with glacier views or scaling jaw-dropping rock formations in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, you’ll need to add our adventure activities upgrade for extra protection. It offers coverage if something goes wrong during your activity and you have unforeseen costs like emergency medical expenses or evacuation.

Check out our adventure activities page for more information.

Sometimes, life has other plans — and unforeseen events can disrupt your much-anticipated Germany vacation. Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans offer trip cancellation coverage, so you can be reimbursed for cancellations resulting from specific eligible reasons, such as unexpected illness or natural disasters.

For more control over your travel plans and financial security, you can add our cancel for any reason upgrade* to our Ultimate plan. This upgrade allows you to cancel your trip for absolutely any reason up to two days before departure and receive reimbursement up to 75% of your insured trip cost.

To take advantage of our cancel for any reason coverage, be sure to purchase the upgrade with our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip expense and at least 31 days prior to your trip departure date. You also must insure the full cost of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses in your policy, with a maximum total trip cost of $10,000.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

Multi-country itineraries are no problem as long as you’re not visiting our blocked destinations.

If you’re visiting multiple countries, what should you enter as your destination when you get a travel insurance quote? If you’re staying within a region like Europe, you can enter “Europe” as your destination. You can also enter the country where you’ll be spending the most time. For instance, if you’ll be in Germany for two weeks and Morocco for five days, you’d enter “Germany” as your destination but still have coverage for the Moroccan part of your trip.

Credit card travel insurance can be handy, but it often falls short when you need it most, either with insufficient coverage or requirements you need to meet before coverage can apply. Travel insurance from a provider like us at Travelex offers a variety of benefits like emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation, and travel delay, so you can feel more prepared to explore Germany.

You may be eligible for coverage if you qualify for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver and purchase our Ultimate plan. To qualify, you’ll need to:

  • Buy the Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Insure 100% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs.
  • Be medically able to travel at the time you purchase the plan.

The waiver applies to conditions diagnosed, treated, or requiring a medication change in the 90 days before buying your plan. This is especially valuable if you’re managing ongoing health needs in Germany and want coverage for medical expenses while abroad.

The best time to buy travel insurance is as soon as you’ve made any non-refundable trip payments, like flights, accommodations, or tours. This helps ensure you have coverage for unexpected cancellations or changes from the moment you start planning your trip.

If you’re buying a Travelex policy, booking early also allows you to take advantage of our optional upgrades like cancel for any reason coverage.

If you're traveling in Germany and face an emergency, you can get immediate help through our Travel On app. With just a tap, you'll be connected to our 24/7 assistance provider who can help with:

  • Locating nearby medical care
  • Coordinating emergency transportation
  • Translating and communicating with local providers
  • Navigating lost passports, stolen items, or legal issues

Whether it’s a health scare or a travel hiccup, the assistance team is just one tap away.
