FAQs about finding the best travel insurance for France
Are there any travel alerts I should be aware of before my trip to France?
Here are a few ways you can see travel alerts that could affect your trip to France before and during your getaway:
- Travelex’s Travel On app can send you instant alerts about safety concerns nearby while you’re traveling — whether you're in Normandy in the north or Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in the south.
- Travelex may list a world event that could change your travel insurance coverage on the Travel Alerts page.
- Check the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories website for potential safety concerns in France.
Do I need travel health insurance for my France trip?
If you get sick or injured while abroad and need emergency medical care, your U.S. health insurance may not give you the coverage you need.
Travel insurance can give you primary coverage for unforeseen medical expenses, which means you can focus more on recovering and less on out-of-pocket costs. You may even be able to have coverage for pre-existing medical conditions depending on the plan you choose and if requirements are met.
Do I need travel insurance for France if I’m traveling with an organized tour?
While you might feel more secure with the structure of an organized tour, travel insurance is a must-have for any French getaway. Why? It gives you an added layer of security for certain unexpected events—like a delayed tour bus or a personal medical emergency. Plus, your tour company may even require that you show proof of travel insurance before leaving on the trip.
Travel insurance can help cover extra covered costs that arise while you’re in Paris to attend the 2024 Olympic Games, taking in the rolling vineyard-covered hills of Bordeaux, or anywhere in between. This means your French adventure can get back to being as calm as a stroll through the lavender fields of Provence a whole lot faster.
Can I get coverage for driving a rental car in France?
Yes! Both the Travel Select and Travel Basic plans let you add Travelex's car rental collision coverage as an optional upgrade. This means you can get help with unanticipated costs from vandalism, accidents, floods, and more.
Dreaming about cruising through French streets on a motorbike, moped, or quadbike? Keep in mind that car rental collision coverage does not offer protection for certain types of vehicles.
Can I get travel insurance if I’m going on a cruise?
If you’re planning to experience the beauty of France by cruise, you can bring Travelex’s cruise coverage with you if you choose to include the Travel Select or Travel Basic plan in your policy.
Whether you get sick on board the ship or have a flight cancellation on the way to the port, a Travelex policy can help with covered unforeseen expenses related to your cruise.
Can I get coverage for adventure sports in France?
The country that's home to the City of Love isn’t just about romance: travelers with an adventurous spirit can find exciting activities across the country, from skiing in Chamonix to bungee jumping off the Souleuvre Viaduct in Normandy. But before you gear up and go, it’s crucial to make sure you have the right coverage for the adventure sports you’re planning to do in Western Europe.
If you choose the Travel Basic or Travel Select plan, your policy will include coverage for specific adventure activities like kayaking, river rafting, and horseback riding.
But if you’re interested in trying an adventure sport that isn’t covered by these base plans — like zip lining at La Colmiane or skydiving at Pau — you may want to get the Travel Select plan and pair it with the adventure sports upgrade.

Can I get coverage if I think I may have to cancel my trip?
Life is unpredictable, and something could come up that means you need to call off your vacation plans entirely. With Travelex’s plans, you can get coverage for canceling your trip to France for certain reasons listed in your policy.
But, if you want to be able to cancel your trip for any reason at all, you can choose the Travel Select plan and add the cancel for any reason upgrade to your policy. You’ll be able to get up to 75% ($7,500 maximum) of your trip cost back as long as you cancel at least 48 hours prior to your departure date.
Remember: You can get coverage with the cancel for any reason upgrade only if your trip length is 30 days or fewer, you buy your policy with the cancel for any reason upgrade included within 15 days of your first trip expense, and you insure all prepaid nonrefundable expenses (with a maximum trip cost of $10,000).
I am visiting multiple countries during my vacation. Can I get travel insurance coverage for my entire trip?
From France, you can easily get to many other countries within Europe to experience different cultures and see new sights all on the same vacation.
At Travelex, you can have coverage for your entire journey — not just in France — as long as you’re not visiting an OFAC-sanctioned country.
When getting your travel insurance quote, simply list your destination as the country where you’ll spend most of your trip. For example, if you want to visit France for five days and Italy for four days, list France as your destination.
