Tips for handling travel mishaps abroad

Let’s be honest ... travel doesn’t always go as planned. That unpredictability can make it exciting, but when things take a turn, these guides are here to help you through it.

Want to know more about our travel insurance for missed connections?

These FAQs explain how our travel insurance for missed flights works, including what happens when you miss a flight or cruise connection and how your coverage can help you recover the costs.

Missed connection travel insurance can help reimburse your necessary expenses and unused prepaid travel arrangements if you experience a missed connection. Examples include nonrefundable tours and transportation to your destination.

We offer missed connection coverage for flights and cruises because there’s always a chance you could miss a connection for reasons out of your control. Maybe your first plane is delayed because of mechanical problems and you take off three hours later than expected. Or perhaps bad weather causes a cancellation resulting in you missing the first leg of your cruise. Both of those travel mishaps could mean you miss your next flight or your cruise departure.

What do you do if you miss your connecting flight or cruise? While you wait for the next airplane or ship to your destination, you’ll likely need food, water, and even a place to stay if there’s no transportation for a while. That’s where your travel insurance with missed connection coverage comes in. It can help cover the unexpected extra costs you encounter while you’re trying to sort out how to get your trip back on track. If you’re traveling with us, you can even call our 24/7 travel assistance provider for support.

We offer travel insurance with missed connection coverage on our Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, Travel Med Go, and Flight Insure Plus plans. Our coverage only applies to missed connecting flights and cruises (not trains or other forms of transportation).

Here’s the maximum amount per person we can reimburse with each plan for eligible expenses because of a missed connection:

Wondering what counts as an eligible expense? We can reimburse your reasonable lodging arrangements, meal expenses, and the unused portion of your travel arrangements up to your plan’s maximum eligible amount. But we can only reimburse you if you miss your connection because:

  • You were in a documented traffic accident on your way to the location where your flight or cruise departed.
  • Your airline canceled or delayed your flight for three hours or more because of mechanical breakdown or adverse weather.

We can help make your wait easier if you miss your flight or cruise connection by helping you afford unexpected costs that come up — but not all costs.

Unfortunately, our travel insurance for missed flights only applies when the delay or missed connection is caused by a covered reason listed in your policy. If the missed connection was due to personal error (like oversleeping or arriving late to the gate), it wouldn’t be eligible for coverage.

Here is another example of an expense we won’t provide coverage for: You book a multi-night stay in a fancy hotel when there’s a flight you can take the next morning after your missed connection. We can offer coverage for reasonable lodging arrangements. In this case, it would be a one-night stay.

Plus, we can only cover up to the limit your plan includes. So, it’s a good idea think twice before booking a fancy hotel or eating an even fancier meal. If it’s more than your plan’s coverage limit, you’d likely be out of pocket.

If you’re unsure whether your situation qualifies, we’re happy to help review your policy details and walk you through your options before you travel. Just call our customer service team at 1-800-228-9792 (8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. CST, Monday - Friday).

We’re here for you if you need us while you’re traveling. Each of our plans includes access to our expert travel assistance provider that you can reach anytime from anywhere. This means if something goes wrong on your trip (like a missed connecting flight!), we can help you get back to enjoying your vacation.

Bonus: You don’t have to search for the right number to call. Just tap the assistance button in our Travel On app to connect with us. Want to call direct instead? Find the right number for you based on your location on our assistance page.

Aren’t familiar with our app? It’s a great travel companion because it sends you real-time safety alerts, has lots of useful destination information, lets you access your policy information easily, and more. Head to our Travel On app page to learn more and download it!

We’re sorry but missed connection coverage doesn’t apply when flights are booked on separate itineraries. Coverage only applies when all segments are part of the same trip booking (meaning the airline or travel provider is responsible for your connection). If your flights were booked independently, any missed connection would not be considered eligible for coverage.

To process a claim under your travel insurance for missed flights, we’ll need documentation that helps verify what happened and any related expenses. This typically includes:

  • Proof of delay from the airline.
  • Receipts for additional transportation or hotel stays.
  • Confirmation of unused prepaid costs (like tours or transfers).
  • We also recommend keeping a copy of your full travel itinerary and any communication from your travel providers.

If you’re ever unsure what to include, our claims team can walk you through exactly what’s needed to make the process as smooth as possible. You can reach them at 1-800-501-4781.
