Want to know more about our travel insurance for Japan?

Travel comes with questions — especially to a place like Japan. Let’s walk through how our travel insurance can help.

We can provide snowboarding and skiing insurance coverage for sporting equipment delays, emergency medical bills, adventure sports, and more to help protect you and your upcoming ski or snowboard trip investment.

If injuries or icy conditions interrupt your travel plans, our travel insurance is designed to offer 24/7 medical assistance and coverage for additional costs in the event your trip is delayed or canceled.

Important: Our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans already include coverage for snowboarding. Skiing, however, carries additional risks — you’ll need to add our adventure activities upgrade to get coverage for this activity.

During your travel planning, you may want to regularly check the U.S. Department of State's travel advisories page for safety concerns in Japan.

At Travelex, we may post events that could affect your coverage on our travel alerts page. Plus, travelers with our coverage can access real-time security alerts in Japan via our Travelex Travel On app

While travel insurance may not be mandatory to travel to Japan, it should be considered an essential part of your vacation planning. You may have spent a lot of time and money organizing your Japan journey, so consider safeguarding your investment with travel insurance. We can help in case of flight changes, medical emergencies, and more.

Japan is in a seismically active part of the world, which means there’s a constant high risk of tsunamis, earthquakes, and other natural disasters occurring. Natural disasters can disrupt your travel plans, cancel flights, make roads impassable, and pose a threat to your safety.

So, it’s important to get travel insurance for Japan that includes trip cancellation and emergency medical expense coverage. With our coverage, you’ll also have access to our 24/7 travel assistance provider for help during a natural disaster in Japan.

While you might be joining an organized tour, it’s still important to consider travel insurance for Japan. Most tour companies actually require proof of travel insurance before departure to join the tour.

Not only can the right coverage help protect you in case you or a travel companion gets sick or injured while away, but it can also provide coverage for unforeseen events such as travel delays, lost luggage, and even nonrefundable tours that get canceled for an eligible reason.

Japan has an extensive network of public transportation that makes traveling around the country efficient and relatively inexpensive. However, if you’re planning to drive a rental car while abroad, travel insurance can help boost protection in the case of an incident that results in damage to the rental vehicle.

When you’re behind the wheel and experience a collision, vandalism, theft, or weather events, including a windstorm, fire, hail, or flood, rental car coverage through travel insurance can assist. You can include our optional rental car damage upgrade with our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans.

Japan is a hotspot for adventure activities, such as hiking to the summit of Mount Fuji, bungee jumping at the Ryujin Big Suspension Bridge, or scuba diving shipwrecks in Okinawa. It’s important to check that you have the right coverage for all the adventure activities you want to try in Japan.

Here’s the best part: Our base plans come with coverage for certain activities like snowboarding, ice skating, horseback riding, and hiking. If you plan on engaging in adventures that aren’t included in our base coverage — such as bungee jumping, scuba diving deeper than 75 feet, or hang gliding — or skiing insurance, you may want to look into our adventure activities upgrade

Still wondering about our adventure activities coverage? You can speak to our customer service team to make sure your policy offers coverage for your planned adventure activities before you buy travel insurance.

If you have a known pre-existing medical condition, you might be concerned about how it could affect your travel to Japan.

Our travel insurance for Japan can provide coverage for pre-existing medical conditions on our Ultimate plan if you insure all trip costs and buy the plan within 21 days of your initial trip payment.

Life is full of surprises — and that includes the time leading up to your vacation to Japan. If you're in the process of planning a trip but uncertainty looms, you’ll be happy to know our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans offer trip cancellation coverage for eligible reasons.

Want to be able to cancel no matter what happens? Our cancel for any reason upgrade* — available with our Ultimate plan — allows you to cancel your trip for any reason up to two days before your departure. Should you decide to cancel, we can reimburse up to 75% of your insured trip costs (up to $7,500).

To be eligible for reimbursement with this optional upgrade, you’ll need to insure all nonrefundable trip costs (up to a maximum of $10,000) with your policy. You must buy the upgrade with the Ultimate plan 31 days or more before your departure date and within 21 days of the initial payment made for your trip.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

Yes, you can get coverage for all parts of your trip, as long as you’re not traveling to a blocked destination that we don’t offer coverage for.

If your Japan journey involves visiting other countries, your main destination should be the one where you anticipate spending the most time. For instance, if you plan a vacation where you’ll visit Japan for a week but stopover in South Korea for two days, you should list Japan as your destination.

While many credit cards do provide travel insurance, these plans often come with lower benefits limits and require certain conditions to be met for the coverage to kick in. Opting for comprehensive travel insurance from a dedicated provider like our team at Travelex can offer more extensive benefits, including potential coverage for pre-existing medical conditions

The best time to buy travel insurance for Japan is as soon as you make your first trip payment — whether that’s booking flights, tours, or accommodations. Purchasing early ensures you can take advantage of trip cancellation coverage, which can reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable costs if an eligible event forces you to cancel.

Buying travel insurance right away also gives you access to certain benefits, like the pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver, which requires that you purchase a plan within a set time frame (usually 21 days from your first trip payment).

If you wait until just before departure, you may still be able to purchase coverage — but you’ll miss out on some of these early-purchase protections. To maximize your benefits, it’s best to get coverage soon after you start booking your Japan trip.

The cost of travel insurance to Japan depends on several factors — including your age, trip length, total trip cost, and the level of coverage you choose. Plans with more benefits, such as trip cancellation or cancel for any reason, will generally cost more.

Since every trip looks different, the best way to find your price is to get a quick quote online. You’ll see options in seconds, so you can compare plans and choose the coverage that fits your Japan itinerary.
