Want to know more about our student travel insurance?

These FAQs break down how our coverage works, what benefits matter most, and how to choose the right plan for your budget. Explore the answers below to get started.

As a student, you want to focus on having fun, incredible new experiences on vacation, not on how you’ll afford unexpected costs. No matter your age and health, you’re never immune to travel mishaps. They can happen to anyone at any time. If you haven’t budgeted for common vacation incidents (like unexpected flight delays and an unanticipated doctor’s visit in another country), you’ll want to consider budgeting for travel insurance.

Student travel insurance can help save your wallet from sudden expenses, which is extra handy when you’re already on a budget. What if someone steals your suitcase over spring break? Or ... a snowstorm cancels your flight to visit family for Christmas? At Travelex, we can reimburse you for those situations and many more. Plus, you’ll have the travel assistance team’s support 24/7 to help you sort out your trip and get back on track.

We do. So, if you’re worried you’ll get sick or hurt on your trip (especially if you’re in another country) we can help. Medical costs can quickly add up when you’re traveling, and your U.S. health insurance often won’t cover you internationally.

With our student travel insurance coverage, we can help you find a nearby doctor, coordinate your medical care, and help pay for your emergency medical expenses. And if you need an emergency medical evacuation to a hospital with the care you need, we can arrange and pay for that, too. We offer more than reimbursement, so you can focus on feeling better ASAP (and your loved ones can worry less as well).

If you’re a student looking for medical coverage, check out our Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, Travel Med Go, and Flight Insure Plus plans — they all offer our emergency medical expense benefit.

Travel insurance isn’t likely the first thing you think about packing when you’re preparing to study abroad, but it could be the most important thing. Before you dive into researching new sights to see and delicious foods to eat (or dreaming of the people you’ll meet and exciting activities you’ll be able to do), it’s a smart move to consider buying student travel insurance for your time abroad.

You’ll be spending most of your time outside of the U.S., which means you won’t have access to your usual support system if you experience crime, lost, stolen, or damaged belongings, and health issues. When you travel with a Travelex plan, we can provide coverage for a variety of situations. And if you need help, our assistance provider is just a call away anytime from anywhere.

Good to know: Studying abroad tends to last several months or more. Our plans have different maximum trip lengths, so make sure you choose a plan that insures your whole trip. Our Essential and Advantage plans can insure you for up to 30 days. If you’re studying abroad longer our Ultimate plan is a great option for trips up to 180 days.*

*90 days for residents of WA. Trips exceeding 30 days in length may result in additional premium.

Whether you’re searching for cheap travel insurance or the most inclusive coverage, we have suitable options for student travelers.

Sticking to a budget but still want essential coverage for the important things? Our Essential plan may provide the affordable travel insurance you’re looking for. With 24/7 travel assistance included and benefits like trip cancellation, emergency medical expenses, and optional upgrades for extra coverage, you can feel good about traveling with our Essential plan.

Able to spend a little more on your travel insurance so you can have more coverage? Our Advantage plan is the next step up from Essential, and it offers higher amounts of coverage to help protect more of your trip cost and unplanned expenses.

If you want to maximize your student travel insurance for your vacation, check out our Ultimate plan. It’s our most inclusive and customizable plan, offering coverage like:

  • Up to $50,000 trip cancellation
  • Up to $75,000 trip interruption
  • Up to $2,000 travel delay
  • Up to $250,000 emergency medical
  • Up to $1,000,000 emergency medical evacuation

Plus, Ultimate is our only plan that gives you eligibility for trip inconvenience, pre-existing medical conditions and coverage for trips up to 180 days.* In addition to the optional upgrades our Essential and Advantage plans offer, with Ultimate you can choose to add our cancel for any reason,𐠒 additional medical, and cancel for any business reason upgrades.

*90 days for residents of WA. Trips exceeding 30 days in length may result in additional premium.

𐠒Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

With extra thrill comes extra risk, so it’s smart to consider adding our adventure activities upgrade to your Travelex policy. It’s available on our Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, and Travel Med Go plans.

With this upgrade, you’ll be eligible for coverage for certain activities not included in your base plan, like skiing, bungee jumping, skydiving, and scuba diving at a depth over 75 feet. So, if something goes wrong while adventuring and you need medical care, we can help support you.

Yes, we do. Our Travel On app gives policyholders easy access to coverage information and provides tap-to-call access to emergency assistance. Download it and you’ll get crime risk ratings for your destination, contact information for local authorities, real-time safety alerts, and more. With our Travelex app, you can stay in the know and get help on the go as a student traveler.

When you’re ready to explore your coverage options, hit the “Get quote” button below, then enter your trip destination to start your free online quote. It’s simple and straightforward to see which plans and upgrades you can choose from, which means you can be traveling with extra confidence before you know it.

Not always, but often. Many host countries, schools, and study abroad programs require student travel insurance for visas or enrollment. Even when it isn’t mandatory, it’s still recommended to help ensure you’re protected while traveling or studying abroad.

Getting sick is never fun, and it can feel even more overwhelming when you’re far from home. Our travel insurance for students is here to help support you. To file a medical claim, enter the policy confirmation number from your confirmation of coverage email into our online claims portal. You’ll be able to submit everything, track progress, and receive updates from our team throughout the process.

Need help right away? Open the Travel On app for tap-to-call emergency assistance. It’s available 24/7, and our emergency assistance provider can help you find the nearest hospital and even assist with translation.
