Want to know more about our travel insurance for Switzerland?

These FAQs break down key benefits, eligibility details, and what to consider before you explore the Swiss cities, mountains, and everything in between.

Travel insurance isn’t required for U.S. citizens visiting Switzerland for less than 90 days. However, it’s still recommended — especially if you’re booking international flights, mountain excursions, or other prepaid experiences.

If you’re a traveler who does need a Schengen visa to enter Switzerland, you’ll be required to show proof of travel health insurance for Switzerland that meets Schengen guidelines, including a minimum of €30,000 in emergency medical coverage.

Travel insurance is required when applying for a Schengen visa, and Switzerland follows the same rules as the rest of the Schengen Zone. To meet the Switzerland travel insurance requirements, your policy must include:

  • At least €30,000 in emergency medical coverage
  • Coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Coverage that is valid in all Schengen countries, not just Switzerland

If you've heard you need travel insurance for a Switzerland visa, it’s referring to these Schengen requirements.

Do you need a visa at all?

U.S. citizens visiting Switzerland for fewer than 90 days do not need a Schengen visa. However, travelers staying longer than 90 days will need to apply for one — and that’s when proof of compliant travel health insurance for Switzerland with emergency medical coverage becomes mandatory.

Our Travelex plans that meet Switzerland’s Schengen visa requirements

Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Travel Med Go plans meet the medical coverage requirement for a Switzerland visa.

For most U.S. travelers visiting Switzerland for fewer than 90 days, you’ll need:

  • A valid passport (must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from Switzerland)
  • Proof of return or onward travel
  • Your Switzerland travel insurance confirmation — especially if your plan includes medical coverage or you want easy access to policy details during your trip

If you’re applying for a Schengen visa, you’ll also need:

  • A printed declaration or confirmation from your travel insurance plan showing it meets Switzerland travel insurance requirements, including at least €30,000 in emergency medical coverage
  • Your visa approval documents

Even though travel insurance isn’t required for short stays, it’s still smart to bring a copy of your policy confirmation and emergency contact numbers. This makes it easier to get help quickly if you need to use your travel insurance for Switzerland for visa purposes or for unexpected emergency medical or travel issues during your trip.

You can — as long as you choose the right plan and add the correct upgrade. All of our comprehensive plans — Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential — include coverage for select low-risk activities like light hiking or kayaking.
If you need travel insurance for skiing in Switzerland or plan to try higher-risk activities, you’ll want to add our adventure activities upgrade to your Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, or Travel Med Go plan.

The upgrade is required for activities such as:

  • Snow skiing
  • Mountain climbing or mountaineering
  • Free climbing
  • Bungee jumping
  • Skydiving, parachuting, or free falling
  • Cliff diving or BASE jumping
  • Hang gliding or parasailing
  • Travel on air-supported devices not operated by a scheduled airline or charter
  • Scuba diving deeper than 75 feet

Adding it helps ensure your policy is aligned with the types of activities you plan to enjoy in Switzerland — from skiing in the Alps to more adrenaline-filled excursions.

Good to know: If you’ll only be snowboarding in Switzerland, you won’t need to include our adventure activities upgrade in your policy as coverage for this activity is included in our comprehensive plans (Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go).

Your Travelex travel insurance can follow you across borders, as long as you don’t visit one of our blocked destinations.

When you get a quote, list “Europe” if you’ll be traveling throughout the region. You can also enter the country where you’ll spend the most time. For example, if you plan to spend five days in Switzerland and three days in France, choose “Switzerland” as your destination when completing your quote.

Your coverage applies across eligible countries — giving you protection throughout your full itinerary, not just in Switzerland.

One of the advantages of traveling with our coverage is access to the Travel On app, which provides policyholders with real-time safety alerts, Switzerland travel information, and tap-to-call travel assistance — helping you stay informed wherever your trip takes you.

It’s also a good idea to review the U.S. Department of State’s travel information for Switzerland and enroll in the STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) for security updates throughout your stay.

You can get protection for your rental car in Switzerland with our rental car damage upgrade. This optional upgrade is available with our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans and can help reimburse eligible accidental damage to your rental car caused by events like theft, fire, or collision.

If you’re planning to rent a vehicle to explore Switzerland’s scenic routes — from lakeside roads to mountain passes — this upgrade can be a helpful addition to your policy.

Just note: The rental car damage upgrade applies only to standard rental cars. It does not extend to mopeds, motorcycles, or specialty vehicles, so keep that in mind when getting your quote.

Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans include trip cancellation coverage for specific, covered reasons — such as an unexpected illness or certain severe weather events. You’ll find the full list of covered cancellation reasons in your plan’s Description of Coverage (DoC).

If you’d like more flexibility, our Ultimate plan offers an optional cancel for any reason upgrade*. This upgrade lets you cancel your trip for any reason up to two days before departure and receive reimbursement of up to 75% of your insured trip cost.

Important: To be eligible for the cancel for any reason upgrade, you must:

  • Purchase it within 21 days of your initial trip payment.
  • Insure 100% of your nonrefundable trip costs (up to $10,000 per person).
  • Buy your policy at least 31 days before departure.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

Yes, all our plans include cruise coverage, which is good news if you’re exploring via Switzerland’s lake and river cruises — including routes on Lake Geneva, Lake Lucerne, and the Rhine.

Our Switzerland travel insurance can offer coverage for eligible cruise-related disruptions, such as cancellations, interruptions, or missed departures for covered reasons.

Whether you’re sailing past vineyard-lined shores, taking in views of the Alps from the water, or connecting to a longer Rhine itinerary, cruise travel insurance can help you stay protected from many unexpected issues that could impact your trip.

If you’re planning to add a cruise to your Switzerland itinerary, explore our cruise travel insurance page to learn more about our coverage.

We recommend purchasing your travel insurance shortly after you make your first booking for Switzerland — whether that’s your flight, rail pass, or a chalet stay in the Alps.

Buying early can give you access to additional protections, such as trip cancellation coverage, which begins the day after you purchase your plan. It also allows you to qualify for certain time-sensitive benefits, like the pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver (available on our Ultimate plan when eligibility requirements are met). The sooner you buy, the more coverage you may have in place before your trip even begins.

Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions may be available if you qualify for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, which is offered on the Ultimate plan only.

To be eligible for this waiver, you’ll need to:

  • Purchase your plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Insure 100% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip cost.
  • Be medically able to travel at the time you buy your policy.

This benefit can be especially important if you’re managing ongoing health needs while traveling abroad — giving you added reassurance as you prepare for your Switzerland trip.

The cost of travel insurance for Switzerland depends on several factors — including the plan you choose, your total trip cost, your travel dates, and the ages of the travelers on the policy.

The easiest way to find out what you’ll pay is to get a quick quote online. It only takes a few seconds to compare your options and see pricing based on your specific trip details.
