Want to know more about our travel insurance for South America?

Explore our coverage and how it can support your well-being while you travel.

South America is rich in culture and natural wonders to explore, but staying informed on the go is essential. Our Travel On app — included with our plans — sends real-time safety alerts about nearby risks or disruptions while you travel. (Just make sure you have geolocation and notifications switched on so you get them!)

Plus, you can check your South American country’s travel advisories posted by the U.S. government and consider registering with STEP (Smart Traveler Enrolment Program), so you receive region-specific updates about your destinations.

You can, unless you plan to visit an OFAC-sanctioned country or one of our blocked destinations like Venezuela.

Want to visit multiple countries within South America on one vacation? We can offer you coverage throughout your trip — but not in Venezuela or any other blocked destination.

If you’re planning to rent a car to explore Chile’s desert roads or Brazil’s winding coastal highways, our rental car damage upgrade can have your back with financial protection for eligible incidents such as collisions, fire, or floods.

Keep in mind: This upgrade is limited to standard vehicles and excludes mopeds, motorcycles, or exotic vehicle rentals.

You can! Our coverage is designed for various types of travel, whether you’re backpacking through the Bolivian Salt Flats, El Chaltén in Argentina, or Cotopaxi National Park in Ecuador.

Backpacking trips may sometimes include multiple countries. For example, you may need travel insurance in Argentina, Colombia, and Chile. When you get a quote for backpacker travel insurance, it’s simple to choose “South America” as your destination. Your coverage will apply to your entire backpacking route, provided none of the locations you visit are OFAC-sanctioned or one of our blocked destinations

Trip cancellations can happen, and sometimes even the most well-planned adventures face unexpected roadblocks. If something does keep you from going on your vacation, our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans offer coverage for cancelling your trip due to specific eligible reasons, such as sudden illnesses or unforeseen natural disasters.

Looking for even more flexibility? Pair our cancel for any reason* upgrade with our Ultimate plan, and you can cancel your trip for any reason up to two days prior to departure, receiving reimbursement of up to 75% of your insured trip costs.

Important: To qualify for our cancel for any reason coverage, you must purchase this upgrade within 21 days of your initial trip payment and at least 31 days prior to your departure date. Additionally, you’re required to insure the total cost of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses up to a maximum of $10,000.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

It's best to buy travel insurance soon after booking your trip to South America — whether that’s your flights, a guided tour, or accommodations.

Buying early may give you access to important time-sensitive benefits, such as coverage for pre-existing medical conditions and trip cancellation coverage.

You may be eligible for coverage in South America if you qualify for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, which is available with our Ultimate plan.

To qualify, you’ll need to:

  • Purchase your plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Insure 100% of your trip cost.
  • Be medically able to travel when you buy the plan.

This added protection can be helpful if you’re managing ongoing health needs while exploring remote regions or active travel experiences in South America.

While travel insurance isn’t required to enter most South American countries for a short stay, some tour operators or guided trip providers may require it — especially for multi-day excursions, remote travel, or adventure-based activities like hiking, rafting, or wildlife tours.

Even when it’s not mandatory, many travelers choose to get coverage to help protect their trip investment and access emergency support if something unexpected happens along the way. It’s always a good idea to check your tour company’s requirements before you go.

It can — we know travel plans can shift. If your dates, destination, or trip details change, just reach out to us before your original departure date.

In many cases, we can update your policy as long as no claims have been filed and your new plans fall within the policy guidelines. We’re here to help keep your coverage aligned with your trip.

Need help making changes? Give us a call at 1-800-228-9792.

Start by thinking about what kind of protection matters most for your trip — whether it’s coverage for cancellations, medical emergencies, or things like travel delays and lost baggage.

If you’re looking for the most comprehensive benefits and upgrade options, our Ultimate plan is a great fit. For strong core coverage, Advantage and Essential offer solid protection at different price points.
