Want to know more about our travel insurance for Mexico?

Travel insurance comes with a lot of moving parts — these FAQs can help you feel prepared for Mexico.

We don’t consider Mexico to be part of the Caribbean for our coverage, so when you get a travel insurance quote with us, make sure to select Mexico instead of the Caribbean.

Travel insurance for Mexico is not required for entry. You won’t be asked to show proof of coverage when arriving in the country.

That said, having travel health insurance for Mexico is recommended. Medical costs — especially at private hospitals, in emergencies, or for medical evacuations — can be high, and many U.S. health insurance plans provide limited or no coverage abroad. Travel insurance can also help with other common disruptions, like trip cancellations, flight delays, or lost baggage.

So, while it isn’t a legal requirement for vacation, travel medical insurance for Mexico can provide valuable financial protection if something unexpected happens during your trip.

With the U.S. and Mexico sharing a border, you may want to drive to Mexico rather than fly. However, travel insurance typically doesn’t cover personal vehicles when driving to Mexico.

If you’re taking your own vehicle on vacation, you may consider looking into separate car insurance to travel to Mexico that’s specifically designed for international travel. You may also be able to extend your existing auto insurance coverage to include travel to Mexico. Reach out to your auto insurance provider to ask about coverage options and requirements for driving in Mexico before you depart.

Yes. Mexican law requires all drivers — including visitors — to have liability coverage when driving in the country. This applies when you rent a car locally.

Our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans offer a rental car damage upgrade, which can help reimburse eligible repair costs after an accident or break-in. However, we don’t offer this car insurance for travel to Mexico, because our rental car damage upgrade doesn’t apply in Mexico.

While planning your trip, it’s important to stay updated on travel alerts posted by the U.S. Department of State on its travel advisories website.

You may find travel alerts that affect your travel insurance policy on our travel alerts page. Plus, as a Travelex policyholder, you get exclusive access to our Travel On app, which can alert you to real-time security risks while you’re in Mexico.

Even if you’re not planning an adventurous getaway, it’s still important to consider travel insurance for Mexico — no matter where you’re staying or what’s on your itinerary. Not only can it help protect you if you unexpectedly get sick or injured while you’re away, but travel insurance can also provide coverage for unforeseen events like flight cancellations and travel delays.

Yes, we can provide coverage for Mexico cruises — and it’s a good idea to get travel insurance even if you depart from the U.S. If your cruise schedule changes, you get sick or injured on board, or you lose your luggage, we can reimburse costs of eligible nonrefundable travel bookings, emergency medical expenses, lost personal belongings, and more.

Scuba diving in Cozumel or rafting down the rapids of the Antigua River in Veracruz? It’s important to ensure you have the right coverage for all the adventure activities you plan to do in Mexico.

Good news: Our base plans include coverage for certain activities like kayaking, river rafting (classes one to three), snorkeling, horseback riding, hiking, and more.

If you think you’ll want to try adventures other than what our base plans provide coverage for — such as scuba diving deeper than 75 feet and skydiving — look into our adventure activities upgrade. You can add it to our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans.

Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans do provide different levels of trip cancellation coverage for certain eligible reasons only.

However, if you include our cancel for any reason upgrade* with our Ultimate plan, you can cancel for any reason —whatever it may be — up to two days prior to your scheduled departure date. This helps ensure you’re not left paying for your entire canceled Mexico trip, as we can reimburse you with 75% of your insured trip costs (up to $7,500).

Important: This upgrade only applies if you insure all your nonrefundable trip costs (up to a maximum of $10,000) with your policy at the time of purchase and add any additional travel arrangements within 14 days of booking them. You must also buy the upgrade with our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your initial payment made for your trip and 31 days or more before your departure date.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

Yes, you can still have coverage for all of your trip, as long as you’re not traveling to a blocked destination that we can’t insure.

If you plan to visit multiple states or countries on your next trip, you should list your destination as the location where you’ll be spending the most time. For instance, if you plan to visit Mexico for two weeks and Belize for three days, you should list Mexico as your destination.

Our Mexico travel medical insurance can offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, but only if you buy our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip payment and insure all trip costs.

Want to know more? Check out our travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions page.

It depends on the type of medical procedures you want coverage for.

Our Mexico travel medical insurance only offers coverage for emergency medical and dental expenses, meaning they’re unexpected and considered medically necessary by the physician.

This means we can’t provide coverage for elective medical procedures in Mexico or traveling for the purpose of obtaining medical treatments.

The best time to buy travel insurance for Mexico is right after you book your trip. Purchasing early means you can take advantage of trip cancellation coverage, which can reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable costs if an eligible event forces you to cancel.

Buying early also matters if you want certain benefits, like the pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver — which requires you to purchase a plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.

You can still purchase coverage up until the day you leave with our Travel Med Go plan (as long as you haven’t departed home), but if you wait, you’ll miss out on those early-purchase benefits. To get the most from your plan, it’s best to buy travel insurance for Mexico as soon as your reservations are made.
