Want to know more about our Austria travel insurance?

Learn how our coverage is designed to help protect you on your journey.

Travel insurance isn’t required for U.S. citizens visiting Austria for up to 90 days, but it’s still highly recommended — especially if you’re booking international flights, outdoor activities, or accommodations in advance.

If you’re a traveler who needs a Schengen visa to enter Austria, then yes — you’ll be required to show proof of travel medical insurance that meets Schengen guidelines.

Travel insurance is a mandatory requirement when applying for a Schengen visa. Your insurance policy must meet specific criteria, including coverage of at least €30,000 (about the same in U.S. dollars) for emergency medical expenses, evacuation, and repatriation. Your coverage also must apply in all Schengen countries — not just Austria — no matter which ones you visit.

If you’ve heard you need Austria visa travel insurance before you can go, this likely means a Schengen visa. So, what is a Schengen visa and do you need one? Austria is part of the Schengen Zone in Europe, where Americans can travel for up to 90 days without a visa. For trips longer than 90 days, you must travel with a Schengen visa — and this means you’ll need Austria visa travel insurance that meets this visa’s requirements above.

We’re here to help: Our Ultimate plan exceeds the Austria travel insurance requirements for a Schengen visa, with over $250,000 emergency medical coverage ($50,000 for NH residents) and $1,000,000 emergency medical evacuation and repatriation coverage

For most U.S. travelers visiting Austria for less than 90 days, you'll need:

  • A valid passport (must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from Austria)
  • Proof of return or onward travel
  • Travel insurance confirmation (especially if your policy includes medical coverage or if you’re applying for a Schengen visa)

If you’re required to obtain a Schengen visa, you’ll also need to bring:

  • A printed Declaration of Coverage (DoC) from your travel insurance plan showing it meets Schengen requirements (minimum €30,000 in medical coverage)
  • Your visa approval documents

Even if insurance isn’t required for your trip, it’s a good idea to carry a copy of your policy confirmation and emergency contact numbers while traveling.

Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans offer coverage for certain milder activities like hiking, horseback riding, and kayaking. If you’re looking for Austria travel insurance for skiing or more thrilling experiences, you can add our adventure activities upgrade to our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, or Travel Med Go plan.

Without this upgrade, some activities may be excluded from your coverage. But with it, you can say yes to Austria’s adventures with travel insurance that’s ready to hit the slopes or paraglide alongside you.

Our travel insurance can apply to all your destinations beyond Austria, unless you visit one of our blocked destinations

When you get a quote, list your destination as “Europe” if you’ll be in the region for the entire trip. You can also list the destination where you’ll spend the majority of the trip. For example, if you plan to spend five days in Austria and three days in Germany, use Austria as your destination when completing your quote.

One of the best parts of packing our coverage means you have access to our Travel On app. It provides real-time safety alerts, Austria travel information, and tap-to-call travel assistance — so you can focus on savoring your schnitzel instead of security risks.

It’s also smart to check the U.S. Department of State’s Austria travel information for advisories and enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) for safety notifications throughout your vacation.

You can — you can drive safer through Austria’s scenic roads and Alpine passes with our rental car damage upgrade. Available on our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans, it can help reimburse eligible accidental damages to your rental car resulting from theft, fire, collision, and more.

Thinking about renting a moped, motorcycle, or specialty vehicle? Our rental car damage upgrade only offers protection for standard cars, so keep that in mind when you get a quote.

You can. Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans offer trip cancellation coverage if you cancel for specific reasons like hurricanes or a sudden severe case of the flu. You’ll see eligible cancellation reasons in your policy’s Description of Coverage (DoC).

Want fewer restrictions for reimbursement if you need to call off your trip? With our Ultimate plan’s optional cancel for any reason* upgrade, you won’t lose your entire vacation investment long-term if you cancel your trip (for any reason) up to two days prior to departure. We can reimburse you up to 75% of your insured trip costs, so you can feel better about booking your Austria vacation.

Important: For our cancel for any reason upgrade to apply, you need to buy it within 21 days of your initial trip payment and at least 31 days before your departure date. You also must insure the total cost of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses up to a maximum limit of $10,000 per person.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

You can. While Austria is well-known for its mountains and cities, its scenic cruises along the Danube River are equally enchanting. Our travel insurance offers coverage for river cruises, which can help protect you against unexpected cancellations, interruptions, or even missed cruise departures for covered reasons. Whether you're exploring the majestic Benedictine abbey in Melk or enjoying Vienna from the deck of your cruise ship, you can relax knowing you're prepared for the unexpected with our cruise travel insurance

We recommend buying travel insurance soon after you book your trip to Austria — whether that’s your flight, rail pass, or ski lodge in the Alps.

Purchasing early can make you eligible for time-sensitive benefits, like a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver or coverage if a scheduled event is canceled due to, for example, adverse weather.  The earlier you buy, the more protection you may have before departure.

Coverage for existing medical conditions in Austria may be available if you qualify for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, offered with our Ultimate plan.

To be eligible, you’ll need to:

  • Purchase your plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Insure 100% of your trip cost.
  • Be medically able to travel at the time of purchase.

This is especially useful if you’re managing ongoing health needs while traveling abroad

The cost of travel insurance for Austria depends on factors like the plan you choose, your trip cost, travel dates, and age of the travelers.
