Want to know more about our travel insurance for trip cancellations?

These FAQs dive deeper into how our trip cancellation, interruption, and inconvenience coverage works, including what’s eligible for coverage and how to get help if your plans change.

Trip cancellation coverage is like a vacation safety net. It can help cover your insured trip cost if you need to cancel your trip before you’ve left home. When you cancel for a reason your policy covers, travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage can help soften the financial blow when you can’t take your trip.

Tip: Consider buying travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage as soon as you pay for any of part of your trip, like your flights or accommodations. This coverage can help protect your insured prepaid and non-refundable trip cost if you can’t go on your vacation for an eligible reason, so the earlier you purchase a policy the longer you can be protected.

We offer trip cancellation coverage on our Essential, Advantage, and Ultimate plans. It can help protect your trip cost (up to the coverage limit) in case you can’t go on your trip, and the coverage starts the day after we receive your policy payment.

Wondering why you might want our travel insurance with trip cancellation coverage? If you experience an eligible mishap before your vacation starts — like you or someone you’re traveling with becoming sick or injured — we can reimburse you for the payments and deposits you paid for your insured trip. This way, you can focus on feeling better, rather than on lost trip costs.

Here's the maximum coverage amount per person for each of our plans with trip cancellation:

When comparing our travel insurance plans, knowing your total trip cost will help you figure out which plan offers the amount of cancellation coverage you need.

Our trip cancellation coverage can’t cover absolutely everything. We can only pay you back if you need to cancel your vacation because of an event eligible for coverage.

So, what does our travel insurance cover for trip cancellation? The best way to check all the eligible reasons is to read the description of coverage for your chosen plan. You can access it either by getting a quote online, or if you’ve already bought a policy, it’ll be in your confirmation of coverage email.

No matter which plan you choose, it’s important to know that for coverage to apply, the reason for your trip cancellation must:

  • Be outside of your control or the control of your family member, traveling companion, or business partner
  • Prevent you, the person traveling with you, or your business partner from taking the trip
  • Happen while your coverage is active and be one of the unexpected events listed in your policy

Good to know: If you cancel your trip because of an unexpected illness or injury, you must get an exam and letter from a doctor noting that you’re unable to travel, or that your non-traveling family member is in a life-threatening condition and needs your care.

There are a lot of unexpected reasons you’d need to cancel your trip, and we offer coverage for a lot of them. From the documented theft of your passport to your airline canceling your flights because of severe weather, our coverage can help ensure you’re not left paying for everything out of pocket.

Remember, you can find the full list of eligible reasons in your policy, so it’s smart to check it before you buy. You can also reach out to our award-winning customer service team for help at 1-800-228-9792.

We have a cancel for any reason upgrade* ... and it’s only available with our Ultimate plan.

While the trip cancellation coverage included in our base plans applies to specific cancellation reasons, our cancel for any reason* upgrade allows you to cancel your trip with no questions asked.

If you include this upgrade, we can reimburse you up to 75% of your prepaid, nonrefundable insured trip costs (up to $7,500) if you need to cancel your trip. For more information on this upgrade and the coverage conditions, please check the description of coverage and visit our cancel for any reason page.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

Trip interruption coverage can help protect you from unexpected travel situations once you’ve left home. It can help if it’s the day of your departure and you’re delayed, as well as when you’re on vacation and you can’t continue traveling as planned.

With travel insurance for trip interruptions, if your trip is put on hold or you have to cut it short because of a reason included in your policy — like an unexpected illness or injury — you can be paid back for your unused insured trip cost and additional transportation expenses.

For example, you catch a bad case of the flu during your trip to Turks and Caicos. You visit the doctor, and they hand you a letter noting that you need bed rest for the next three days. Because of this, you miss the nonrefundable snorkeling tour you booked for the next day. Plus, you can’t make your prebooked boat transfer to another beach for the day after the tour and your first night’s stay in a hotel there. With trip interruption coverage, you could be reimbursed for the prepaid costs of that tour, transfer, and accommodation.

We provide trip interruption coverage on our Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, and Travel Med Go plans.

If your vacation is delayed or you can’t keep traveling for an eligible reason and you’ve bought one of these plans, we can reimburse your nonrefundable, unused, and insured travel arrangements.

We can also pay back one of the following additional transportation expenses:

  • The cost for you to travel from your trip interruption point to your next or final destination.
  • The cost for you to travel to your next destination if you leave after your scheduled departure.

Important: The cost of your additional transportation can’t be more than the cost of a one-way economy flight or the class on your original tickets. You must take the most direct route, and we won’t cover any refundable payments you made.

Our trip interruption coverage can reimburse you up to 150% of your total insured trip cost (depending on the plan purchased), but the maximum payout limit and reimbursement percentage varies for each our plans. It’s important to keep this in mind if you need to make new bookings while you’re traveling because your trip has been interrupted for an eligible reason.

Here’s the most we can reimburse you for trip interruption under each plan per person:

If you’re comparing our travel insurance plans, knowing your trip cost will help you understand which of our plans can give you the right amount of trip interruption coverage for your trip.

It applies if you experience your trip interruption while your policy is active and you’re on your trip or it’s the day of your departure.

The Description of Coverage (DoC) for each of our plans lists all the eligible reasons for when our trip interruption applies (there are lots of them!) To access these documents, you can get a quote online. If you’ve already bought a policy, your plan information will be in your confirmation of coverage email. You can also ask our customer service team questions about your policy at 1-800-819-9004.

Good to know: Just like our trip cancellation coverage, if you want to make a trip interruption claim that’s related to sickness or injury, you’ll need a note from the doctor that says you’re unable to continue your trip, or that your non-traveling family member is in a life-threatening condition and needs your assistance at home. If your trip interruption reason isn’t an illness or injury, it needs to be outside of your control, an eligible reason in your policy, prevent you from traveling or continuing your trip, and occur while your policy is active.

Our Ultimate plan offers trip inconvenience coverage for unexpected travel issues. If a closed ski resort, golf course, amusement park, or beach at your destination affects your vacation plans, we can pay you up to the benefit limit if it’s because of an eligible reason. We can also cover cruise disablement if it’s because of a reason eligible for coverage in your policy. But remember, your trip inconvenience reason must be unforeseen, meaning you didn’t know it would happen and purchase requirements may apply.

The benefit limit for trip inconvenience under our Ultimate plan is $600. Keep in mind that we can only pay for one instance of each type of trip inconvenience per policy. So, if two beaches are closed during your trip, we can only cover you for one closure. But if one beach and one amusement park are closed, we can cover you for both.

Here’s how much we can pay you for each type of trip inconvenience per insured person:

  • Closed attractions: $200 maximum
  • Closed beach: $200 maximum
  • Cruise disablement: $200 maximum

Here are the details for each type of trip inconvenience that we can cover:

  • Closed attractions: The ski resort, golf course, or amusement park in your destination closes because at least 75% of its primary attractions are closed from lack of snow, severe weather, or closure of essential services during operating hours. You’ll only have this coverage if you buy your plan 21 days or more before your scheduled departure date.
  • Closed beach: Government authorities close the beach at your destination for at least 48 consecutive hours because of contamination from bacteria, algae, and marine or water boom. You’ll only have coverage if there are no other documented alternate beaches open within 10 miles from your location.
  • Cruise disablement: You’re stuck away from port for more than three hours on your cruise without power, food, water, and/or restroom facilities.
