Want to know more about our emergency medical travel insurance?

Have questions about what happens if you get sick or injured while traveling abroad? These FAQs explain how international travel emergency medical insurance works.

Travel insurance that includes medical coverage (and dental in some cases) can help ensure you’re not left with big bills to pay if you need emergency medical help. A visit to the doctor or hospital often comes at a high cost, especially if you’re in a different country.

At Travelex, we’re here to help you when you need it most. That’s why we include coverage for unexpected medical and dental costs in most of our plans, plus access to 24/7 assistance. If you travel with our emergency medical travel insurance, we can reimburse your unexpected doctor or hospital bills. This way, you won’t be footing the bill on your own long-term.

We have Travelex plans with emergency medical coverage, which means we can reimburse you for unexpected costs incurred on your trip, such as:

  • Services of a physician or registered nurse
  • Hospital charges
  • Local ambulance services
  • Prescription medication
  • Therapeutic services

The amount of coverage we provide varies depending on the plan you choose, so keep reading to find out which of our plans include emergency medical travel insurance and the limits.
Worried about having to pay upfront just so you can receive treatment? If you have a Travelex policy, give our 24/7 assistance provider a call. We can sometimes pay in advance if there’s a charge for you to get medical care or hospital admission. This way, you don’t have to worry about scrambling funds together when you need it most.

Oh, and remember our coverage only applies to unexpected medical situations, not elective surgeries like cosmetic surgery. So, if you’re planning on having elective surgery while on vacation, we won’t be able to provide coverage for your trip.

Dental coverage is often included with medical coverage on a travel insurance policy, but it’s important to check what is and isn’t eligible for coverage. This type of coverage is designed for emergency dental treatment. It cannot be used for elective dental procedures like teeth whitening or straightening, so make sure you read the policy conditions.

Our Travelex plans can provide travel insurance for dental treatment abroad. This coverage could come in handy if you fall and chip a tooth or need to visit a dentist for a sudden and severe toothache because we may be able reimburse your dental expenses.

Want a Travelex plan with dental coverage? If you purchase our Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, or Travel Med Go plans, you’ll have $500 emergency dental coverage to cover unexpected teeth-related incidents. With our Flight Insure Plus plan, your dental benefits are included with your $10,000 emergency medical benefit.

For more information on our travel insurance with dental coverage, you can get a quote and read the policy for each of our plans.

Picture this: You're walking on the beach in the Bahamas when you step on a sharp shell and need to see a doctor. (Ouch!) Or maybe you’re on a cruise and catch the stomach bug that’s going around, so you visit the onboard medical facilities. Along with figuring out how to get health care away from home, you’ll likely be paying for potentially costly medical bills.

Plus, if you’re in another country, your U.S. health insurance provider probably won’t cover your emergency medical costs. So, all the financial responsibility would fall on your shoulders and your wallet.

Our international travel emergency medical insurance can have your back if something affects your health during your trip. But it’s not only costly bills we can help with. Our 24/7 assistance provider can help you find medical facilities, so you get the treatment you need and even provide support with telehealth appointments or prescription services. Because when you travel with one of our Travelex plans, we want you to focus on getting well soon (and back to your vacation).

Almost all of our plans include emergency medical coverage.

Here’s the limit per person for emergency medical expenses for each of our plans that include this coverage:

*If you’re a New Hampshire resident, the benefit limit for emergency medical expenses on our Ultimate plan is $50,000.

Yes, we can. Whether you’re looking for emergency medical travel insurance for seniors that includes coverage for pre-existing conditions or you’re a little younger but want to make sure you have coverage for your health conditions, we can help.

Our Ultimate plan is our most comprehensive plan and comes with extra coverage, including a pre-existing medical condition waiver. For coverage to apply, you need to buy our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip payment, be medically fit to travel when you purchase your plan and insure your total trip cost. If you do, we’ll waive the pre-existing medical condition exclusion that applies to our other plans.

So, if you’re worried your asthma or diabetes could give you trouble on vacation ... or even prevent you from going on your trip, our Ultimate plan might be a good choice for you.

When you choose to travel with one of our plans, yes. We have up to nine optional upgrades available (depending on which plan you choose), including our medical coverage upgrade. It’s available with our Ultimate and Travel Med Go plans and allows you to add an extra $250,000 to your total emergency medical travel insurance benefits.

With our medical upgrade, you’ll get this level of coverage:

  • Ultimate: $250,000* base plan limit plus $250,000 upgrade limit = $500,000
  • Travel Med Go: $50,000 base plan limit plus $250,000 upgrade limit = $300,000

*If you’re a New Hampshire resident, the medical upgrade is not available and the base plan benefit limit for emergency medical expenses on our Ultimate plan is $50,000.

When you vacation with a Travelex policy, you have access to our travel assistance provider 24/7. Whether you have a medical or travel emergency, we can help anytime from anywhere.

The easiest way to reach us is by tapping our assistance button in our Travel On app! It’ll send you to the right number to call. Or you can call us directly at 1-800-555-0870 from the U.S. and Canada or 1-416-977-1803 from other countries.

If you experience a medical emergency while traveling, your first priority should always be to get the care you need. However, whenever possible, you or someone on your behalf should contact our 24/7 emergency assistance provider before or as soon as reasonably possible after receiving treatment.

Our assistance provider can help locate an appropriate hospital or clinic, confirm coverage with providers, and coordinate evacuation if needed. Some hospitals abroad may require verification of benefits before admitting or treating you.

If you are unable to call in advance due to the severity of your condition, contact the assistance team as soon as you are stable so they can review your claim and arrange any necessary follow-up care.

Yes, there are. Some higher-risk activities aren’t included in our base plans. But with our adventure activities upgrade, you can expand your emergency medical travel insurance to include certain sports and recreation (e.g., skiing, scuba diving, canyoning, and more) when done safely and within your plan’s guidelines. We always recommend reviewing your policy details before you travel to understand what’s eligible for coverage.

With Travelex’s emergency medical travel insurance, travelers may sometimes need to pay for care upfront and then submit documentation for reimbursement. If you require hospital admission or significant treatment costs, contact our 24/7 travel assistance provider right away. In some cases, we can work directly with the medical facility to arrange payment, helping you avoid out-of-pocket stress during an emergency.

If your medical expenses go beyond the covered amount, you would be responsible for any remaining costs. Because treatment prices can vary widely between destinations, we recommend looking at our Ultimate plan or adding our additional medical upgrade for higher benefit limits. These options offer our most extensive protection under international travel emergency medical insurance, giving you stronger coverage when you need it most.
