Want to know more about our travel insurance for Iceland?

Before you go, get familiar with our travel insurance for Iceland trips. These insights can help you choose coverage that fits your itinerary.

Travel insurance isn’t required for entry into Iceland, but it’s strongly recommended — especially if you’re flying from the U.S., visiting during winter, or planning outdoor activities like glacier walks or geothermal tours.

Why consider travel insurance for Iceland?

Emergency medical protection

Medical care abroad can be costly without coverage, especially if you’re far from Reykjavík or participating in outdoor activities that carry risk.

Trip cancellation and interruption

Iceland’s fast-changing weather, flight delays, missed connections, or illness can significantly impact your itinerary. Coverage can help with nonrefundable trip costs when plans change unexpectedly.

Delay and baggage coverage

If your flight is delayed—or if baggage is lost, delayed, or damaged—these benefits can help cover extra expenses and essential items.

Adventure activities coverage

Planning to take a charter plane for the best views of Iceland or try a different adventure activity? Consider adding the adventure activities upgrade to our comprehensive plans for added protection.

Driving and road conditions

Many travelers rent a car to explore the Ring Road or the Golden Circle. Optional upgrades like our rental car damage coverage can help if strong winds or debris cause damage.

Yes, Iceland is considered part of Europe for travel insurance purposes.
If you’re only visiting Iceland, simply select “Iceland” as your destination when getting a quote online.

If you’re traveling to multiple European countries, choose the destination where you’ll spend the most time. For example, if you’re in Iceland for seven days and Spain for five days, you can list Iceland as your destination.

Just make sure your itinerary doesn’t include any of our blocked destinations, as we do not offer coverage for these destinations.

You can. If you plan to drive a rental car in Iceland, you can add our rental car damage upgrade to your policy. This upgrade can provide protection if your rental car is damaged in an accident — which is especially helpful given Iceland’s strong winds, gravel roads, and unpredictable weather.

To find out more, check out our road trip travel insurance page.

While planning your trip, it’s important to stay updated on travel alerts posted by the U.S. Department of State on its travel advisories website.

Travel alerts that may affect your Iceland travel insurance policy can be found on our travel alerts page. Plus, as a Travelex policyholder, you can receive real-time security alerts while in Iceland via our Travel On app

Even if you’re joining an organized tour, it’s still a good idea to have travel insurance for Iceland. Many tour operators ask travelers to show proof of insurance before departure, especially for itineraries that include outdoor activities or remote areas.

Travel insurance can help if you or a travel companion becomes sick or injured while abroad, and it may also offer protection for unexpected situations like travel delays, lost luggage, or prepaid tours that get canceled due to severe weather or other covered events.

Yes, coverage for cruises is included in our Travelex plans — just pick the one that’s best for you and your trip plans.

Still considering if it’s worth buying coverage for your cruise? Travel insurance for Iceland trips can be especially helpful when you’re spending part of your trip at sea. If your cruise itinerary changes, you become sick or injured on board, or you miss a connecting flight before embarkation, the right plan can help cover costs related to nonrefundable bookings, emergency medical care, emergency evacuation, and lost or delayed personal items.

Planning to free-climb a glacier, charter a private plane for aerial views of Iceland, or scuba dive beyond 75 feet? It’s important to make sure your travel insurance includes the right type of activity coverage for what you intend to do.

At Travelex, our base plans include coverage for many standard activities. However, for higher-risk adventures — such as glacier climbing, private aviation tours, or deeper scuba dives — you may need to add our adventure activities upgrade to your policy. This upgrade extends coverage to a wider range of activities that aren’t included in our base plans.

Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans all include trip cancellation coverage, which can reimburse you for certain nonrefundable trip costs if you need to cancel for a covered reason.

If you want even more flexibility, our cancel for any reason upgrade* may be worth considering. Available on our Ultimate plan, it allows you to cancel your trip for any reason up to 48 hours before your scheduled departure and receive reimbursement of up to 75% of your insured trip cost (up to $7,500).

To qualify, you’ll need to:

  • Insure all of your nonrefundable trip costs (up to $10,000) when you buy your policy.
  • Purchase the upgrade within 21 days of your initial trip payment.
  • Add any new trip arrangements to your policy within 14 days of booking them.
  • Buy your policy at least 31 days before departure.

Cancel for any reason can be a helpful safeguard if you’re booking expensive flights, tours, or accommodations and want additional flexibility before heading to Iceland.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

It can! Coverage may be available when you purchase the Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip payment and insure 100% of your nonrefundable trip costs. When those requirements are met, the plan can include a waiver that allows coverage for certain pre-existing medical conditions, provided all other terms are satisfied.

The waiver does not apply automatically, and it isn’t available on every plan. It must be added within the required purchase window, and your full trip cost must be insured at the time of purchase. Keep in mind that all other policy terms, conditions, and exclusions still apply.

If you’re traveling to Iceland with ongoing health concerns, securing coverage early can help ensure you’re protected if an unexpected medical issue arises during your trip.

The best time to buy Iceland travel insurance is right after you make your first trip booking. Purchasing early gives you access to important time-sensitive benefits — most notably the pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, which is available when you buy the Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip payment and insure your full trip cost.

Buying early also means your trip cancellation coverage begins the day after you purchase your policy, so you're protected sooner if an unexpected event forces you to cancel your Iceland trip.
