Want to know more about our travel insurance with primary coverage?
Simply put, primary coverage offers a less complicated claims process. It refers to the order in which you can file your medical expense claim with your travel insurance provider. When you have travel insurance with primary medical coverage, you can file your claims directly with your travel insurance provider first.
Without primary coverage, you’d have to first file claims with other policies you hold, like your private health insurance. Then, you’d need to wait for those claims to be processed and finalized before filing a claim with us. This can take a lot of time and effort, which can be unsettling when you’re already dealing with travel issues and unanticipated costs.
It’s often hard enough to deal with travel mishaps, let alone multiple insurance policies and any terms that apply. So, at Travelex, we offer travel insurance with primary medical coverage, so you can file your claim with us and let our team handle the rest (instead of filing with your health insurance company first). Plus, if you’re traveling in another country (or even in certain U.S. states), your health insurance may not even apply. But with travel insurance with primary coverage, we’re here to support you with a smoother process.
Here are two benefits of vacationing with our primary coverage:
- Extensive protection: Our primary coverage tends to offer a broader range of protection without the need for additional policies elsewhere, which can be crucial in emergencies. Plus, along with your travel insurance with medical coverage, you’ll have other benefits that regular health insurance plans won’t offer, like baggage protection, trip cancellation, and travel delay. You can learn more about our other travel insurance benefits or scroll down to discover more about each one.
- Extra confidence: Knowing that we’ll be the first to process your claim can bring a welcome sense of relief. Then, you can focus on resolving your situation, rather than navigating complex insurance procedures.
It varies based on your claim, but what we can say is this: Since our travel insurance with primary medical coverage handles claims directly, it often results in quicker reimbursements than plans with secondary (or “excess”) travel insurance medical coverage.
You won't have to coordinate between multiple insurers, which can be time-consuming and complicated. This makes a big difference considering the time required for filing, processing a claim, and receiving reimbursement
If you purchase a health care plan, the deductible refers to the amount you must pay out of pocket before your insurance provider begins to pay your medical expenses. For instance, if your plan has a $1,000 deductible and you suffer an injury that costs you $2,500, you’d have to pay $1,000 towards the bill yourself before your insurer pays anything.
When you travel with one of our Travelex plans that includes travel insurance with primary coverage, you may not have any deductibles depending on your state of residence. The medical and dental expense benefits do not have a deductible in most states. In the following states, a $50 deductible applies: CT, IN, KS, MO, MT, VT, WA.
This means, in most states, if you have a $20, $200, or $2,000 hospital bill, you aren’t required to pay anything before your travel insurance kicks in to reimburse you. Instead, you’d file a claim with us to be eligible to receive reimbursement for the emergency medical expenses you paid out of pocket.
You’ll have primary coverage if you buy our Ultimate, Advantage, Travel Med Go or Flight Insure Plus plan. You can compare and explore each of our plans easily online to help find one that suits your travel needs.
Good to know: Our Essential plan provides excess medical coverage rather than primary, so you’d have to file with your primary health insurance plan first. (Note: If you’re a Connecticut resident, you’ll have primary coverage with our Essential plan.)
With travel insurance that includes primary medical coverage, you come straight to us if you get sick or injured on your trip. There’s no need to deal with your health insurance first! It helps make the claims process faster and less stressful during a time when you just want to focus on feeling better.
With secondary coverage, you’d need to file with your health insurance provider before we could step in to review any remaining eligible expenses.
No, having travel insurance with primary medical coverage through us doesn’t affect your home health insurance or your premiums. We handle your travel-related medical claims separately, so your health insurance provider isn’t billed or involved unless you choose to file with them.
Our goal is to make things simpler while you’re traveling, so you can get care quickly without worrying about how it might impact your regular health coverage back home.
