Blocked and sanctioned countries where travel insurance may not apply
Your safety comes first. Because of restrictions or safety risks, travel insurance is limited or doesn’t apply in certain destinations.
To protect our travelers and operate responsibly, we follow government rules like U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions that limit or restrict doing business in certain countries or regions. Because of those sanctions, we don’t provide coverage for trips to, through, or from any of the destinations listed below.
Destinations with comprehensive OFAC sanctions
A comprehensive OFAC sanction means the U.S. government limits most travel and business with a country or region. The destinations below have comprehensive sanctions, so coverage is generally not available for policies underwritten by Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company or Zurich American Insurance Company.
| Comprehensively sanctioned country or region |
|---|
Cuba* |
Iran |
Syria |
North Korea |
| Ukrainian regions of Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk (district) |
Along with the destinations above, Zurich Group, the insurance company that provides coverage for our travel insurance policies, considers the following destinations to have comprehensive sanctions:
| Region |
|---|
Belarus |
Russia |
Ukrainian regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia |
*You may be eligible for coverage in Cuba, but we require approval to insure travel to the country. Please call our customer service team at 1-800-228-9792.
Additional blocked countries and regions
Some OFAC sanctions only target specific activities, people, or industries rather than entire countries. Even though the destinations below are not comprehensively sanctioned, they do have sanctions that prevent travel insurance coverage.
