What does travel insurance cover?

While all of Travelex’s plans can provide a certain level of protection for almost any trip, variables such as the destination, trip length, and activities you plan to engage in while traveling will all determine which plan would suit you best.

Additionally, if you’re looking for a plan with increased medical coverage and a larger variety of upgrades, the Travel Select plan provides comprehensive protection whereas the Travel Basic plan offers essential coverage at a budget-conscious price.

How do I calculate my trip cost?

Your trip cost will include all pre-paid, non-refundable expenses. When calculating trip cost, be sure to keep receipts of all travel purchases such as train and/or flight tickets, hotel fees, tour guide costs, and more. The total of these expenses will amount to your trip cost.

If your travel plans include additional travelers, be sure to accurately detail how much each individual traveler has paid for the upcoming trip. This number will account for the “Trip Cost”. If costs are split among travelers - for example, a $300 shared hotel room where each of the three travelers pays $100 - then the individual trip cost would amount to the individual’s share.

Can I get travel insurance for an existing medical condition?

Yes, coverage is available if you purchase the plan within 3 days of your final payment for the Travel America plan, or 15 days for the Travel Select plan, of your initial trip payment. Additional requirements vary per plan.

What happens if I need to cancel my trip?

If you need to cancel your trip due to an unforeseen incident or mishap, Travelex can provide travel insurance coverage. You are able to cancel a trip up to the date and time of departure as long as the reason for cancellation is addressed and covered within your Policy Documents.

Reasons include, but are not limited to: serious injury, sickness, or death, you are laid off or involuntarily terminated from work, you are required to work during your scheduled trip, a flight is canceled due to inclement weather, or there is a terrorist incident in a city listed within your travel itinerary.

When should I buy travel insurance?

Effective October 22, 2022, for the Travel Select (trip costs $20,000 per person or less and trips 30 days or less only), Travel Basic, and Travel America plans, if your first trip payment date is within 15 days of the plan purchase date, the plan may be purchased up to 11:59pm on the date prior to your departure. If your first trip payment date is greater than 15 days prior to the plan purchase date, the plan must be purchased at least 5 days prior to your departure date.

For Travel Select if your trip cost is greater than $20,000 per person or your trip is longer than 30 days, if your first trip payment date is within 15 days of the plan purchase date, the plan may be purchased up to 11:59pm on the date prior to your departure. If your first trip payment date is greater than 15 days prior to the plan purchase date, the plan must be purchased at least 14 days prior to your departure.

Though you may wait to purchase a travel insurance policy, there are benefits should you choose to purchase following your first trip payment. If you purchase the Travel Select plan within 15 days of your first trip payment, you will have access to the pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, as well as coverage for financial default. Additionally, for both Travel Basic and Travel Select, Travelex offers a 15-day look period in case you change your mind concerning your policy purchase and would like a refund.

This means that if within 15 days of purchase you are not satisfied with your plan, and have not yet departed or filed a claim, Travelex will refund your plan cost.
