Want to know more about our travel insurance for Canada?

Learn about our coverage and how we help support you and your travel plans while you’re in Canada.

While travel insurance isn't required for entry into Canada, it's recommended — especially if you're flying in from the U.S., planning winter adventures, or visiting remote areas.

Why consider travel insurance for Canada?

  1. Emergency medical protection: Medical care in Canada can be costly without coverage, especially in rural regions or during ski injuries.
  2. Trip cancellation and interruption: Weather disruptions, missed connections, or illness can impact your plans significantly.
  3. Delay and baggage coverage: If your flight is delayed, or baggage is lost, these benefits can help cover extra expenses.
  4. Adventure activities support: Going skiing or on another other active excursion? Consider adding the adventure activities upgrade to our comprehensive plans for added protection.
  5. Cross-border comfort: Coverage includes multiple provinces and modes of travel — from city stays to mountain road trips.

For travelers planning Canada get-aways with medical concerns, remote destinations, or active itineraries, a well-chosen travel insurance plan can provide you with extra confidence — straight from the U.S. to the Great White North.

With endless wide-open spaces and awe-inspiring national parks, Canada was made for road trips. If you’re planning to drive a rental car while abroad, our rental car damage upgrade can add protection in case of an accident that results in damage to your rental car.

To find out more, check out our road trip travel insurance page

With much of the northern U.S. and Canada sharing a border, many Americans may choose to drive to Canada rather than fly. However, travel insurance for visitors to Canada typically doesn’t cover personal vehicles; it primarily focuses on providing coverage for the traveler and their belongings during the trip.

If you’re taking your own vehicle to Canada, you may consider looking into separate auto insurance options specifically designed for international travel or extending your existing auto insurance coverage to include international travel to Canada. Before you leave on your trip, it's a good idea to contact your auto insurance provider to inquire about coverage options and requirements for driving in Canada.

While planning your trip, it’s important to stay updated on travel alerts posted by the U.S. Department of State on its travel advisories website.

Travel alerts that may affect your travel insurance policy can be found on our travel alerts page. Plus, as a Travelex policyholder, you can receive real-time security alerts while in Canada via our Travel On app

While you might be joining an organized tour, it’s still important to have travel insurance for Canada. Many tour companies even require proof of travel insurance before departure to join the tour.

Not only can it help protect you in case you or a travel companion gets sick or injured while away, but travel insurance can also provide coverage for unforeseen events such as travel delays, lost luggage, and even non-refundable tours that get canceled because of severe weather.

If you're planning to set sail on a cruise during your trip to Canada, it’s worth considering investing in travel insurance. If your cruise schedule changes, you get sick or injured on board, or you miss a connecting flight before boarding, the right coverage can help to reimburse costs of non-refundable travel bookings, emergency medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation, lost personal belongings, and more.

Visiting Canada for a snow adventure at Whistler, Big White, or another Canadian ski resort? It’s smart to help protect your finances from emergency medical expenses with travel insurance with adventure activities coverage.

At Travelex, our base plans offer coverage for certain snow sports like ice skating, snowboarding, and tubing. But for skiing coverage, you can add our adventure activities upgrade to your policy.

Life is unpredictable and the reality is you don’t always know what’s around the corner.

If you’re planning a trip, our cancel for any reason upgrade* may be a wise addition to your travel insurance policy. Available only on our Ultimate plan, it lets you cancel for any reason — whatever it may be — up to 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure date. This can help ensure you’re not left completely out of pocket, as we can reimburse you with 75% of your insured trip cost (up to $7,500).

To be eligible for reimbursement with this optional upgrade, you’ll need to:

  • Insure all your nonrefundable trip costs (up to a maximum of $10,000).
  • Purchase the Ultimate plan at least 31 days before your departure date and within 21 days of your initial payment for your trip.
  • Insure subsequent arrangements within 14 days of booking them.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

If you’re searching for health insurance to go to Canada from the U.S., it’s important to understand the medical coverage that travel insurance can and can’t offer.

Our plans can offer coverage for eligible emergency medical and dental expenses. This does not include elective medical procedures undertaken while abroad or traveling for the purpose of obtaining medical treatments.

If you have pre-existing medical conditions, you may be wondering if they’ll cause you problems during your trip to Canada. Our travel insurance to Canada from the USA can offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions if you purchase our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip payment and you are medically fit to travel at the time of purchase.

While numerous credit cards offer travel insurance, the plans offered can have lower benefit limits and often include special conditions required to activate the coverage. Travel insurance from a specialized provider like Travelex can provide greater coverage across several important benefits, such as possible coverage for pre-existing medical conditions

No — all of our plans must be purchased before you leave for Canada. You cannot sign up once you’ve crossed the border.

If you’re buying coverage at the last minute, our Travel Med Go plan is still available up through the day of your departure, so long as you haven’t left home. It provides many benefits, including medical coverage and 24/7 assistance, but does not include trip cancellation coverage. If you need cancellation protection, consider purchasing our Ultimate, Advantage, or Essential plan before your trip begins.
