Want to know more about our LGBTQ+ travel insurance?

Your safety and identity matter. Find out how our coverage is here to support both.

Any trip is worth protecting, because we never know what travel mishaps — and unexpected costs — could come up. From flight cancellations to illnesses and injuries, travel comes with risk.

For the LGBTQ+ community, the risk of something going wrong may be a bit higher. You may be more likely to:

  • Experience crime
  • Have legal issues
  • Have trouble finding healthcare abroad

We want you to feel free to be yourself on vacation. But it might be tricky (and costly) if your vacation plans go awry — from stolen belongings or lost luggage to a missed connection or travel delay.

Our LGBTQ+ travel insurance can be the answer to your travel problems, with reimbursements for eligible:

  • Necessities like meals and a hotel stay during your eligible travel delay
  • Urgent medical care for your illness or injury in another country
  • Emergency medical evacuation if you can’t get the care you need in your destination
  • Essential replacement items like clothes and toiletries if you have lost or delayed luggage

At Travelex, we’re a team of allies — and some of us are also members of the LGBTQ+ community! Fostering equality, inclusion, and diversity isn’t just a one-time effort — it’s something we prioritize every single day. We’re dedicated to embracing people of all ages, genders, races, and sexual identities because we believe diversity makes us stronger — and travel experiences better!

Why do we celebrate pride all year long? We believe that:

  • Our incredible customers and award-winning team bring a wealth of perspectives and ideas to the table.
  • Diversity fuels innovation and helps us build a better business.
  • Our coverage should cater to every traveler and every trip.

No matter how you identify yourself, we’re proud to welcome you into our Travelex family.

Certain benefits may be extra important for queer adventurers to have in their LGBTQ+ travel insurance policy.

Medical emergencies

Whether it's a sudden illness or an unexpected accident, our LGBTQ+ travel insurance offers emergency medical and evacuation coverage.  It can help you get the care you need without added stress.

Plus, our 24/7 medical assistance provider can help you find LGBTQ-friendly healthcare providers nearby and coordinate your emergency medical evacuation. We want you to feel understood and respected while you get the treatment you deserve.

Kids-included pricing

Our Ultimate plan can cover one child per each insured adult at no additional cost. So, if you’re traveling with your spouse, you can include up to two children on your policy. Our LGBTQ+ family travel insurance makes it easier — and less pricey — for you to protect your kids.

You can get Ultimate’s kids-included pricing if:

  • Your child is 17 years old or younger.
  • The insured adult is at least 18 years old.
  • Your child’s individual trip cost is equal to or lower than the insured adult’s individual trip cost.

Good to know: If you include upgrades in your policy, each traveler will need to pay the upgrade cost.

Trip cancellations

Plans can change in the blink of an eye. With trip cancellation coverage, you can cancel your trip for an eligible reason (like illness or injury) and get up to 100% of your insured trip cost back. You can get this benefit on our Ultimate, Advantage, or Essential plan.

Want to be able to cancel your trip no matter what happens? Maybe you don’t want to miss the local Pride parade or want to change your trip to a more LGBTQ+-friendly destination. Our cancel for any reason* upgrade can help you get back some of your insured trip cost.

Lost, stolen, damaged, or delayed luggage

You never know if your luggage will decide to go on its own adventure. Our baggage benefits keep you from feeling stranded without your important items. It can reimburse you for the cost of your eligible replacement belongings to help you get back on track without worrying about your wallet.

* Cancel for any fortuitous reason for residents of NY.

Yes, you and your partner can share one Travelex policy whether you’re married or not!

We don’t treat you differently; all our travelers are part of our Travelex family. So, you can add any adult living in your household to your policy — up to 10 people!

There are lots of ways we can offer you coverage if something happens to your family member and affects your trip. Here are just a few:

  1. Trip cancellation
    1. Your family member gets sick, injured, or passes away
    2. Your family member is hosting you during your trip and no longer can because of their life-threatening illness or injury or passing away
  2. Trip interruption
    1. Something happens to a family member while you’re already traveling (illness, injury, or death) and you need to cut your trip short

You’ll see “Family Member” frequently in your Travelex policy (description of coverage). At Travelex, family is family — no matter your identity. Here’s what we consider to be a family member when it comes to travel insurance:

  • Spouse, ex-spouse, domestic partner, fiancé, fiancé’s child
  • Child, spouse’s child, foster child, ward
  • Parent(s), step-parent(s), parent(s)-in-law
  • Sibling(s), step-sibling(s), sibling(s)-in-law
  • Grandparent(s), grandchild
  • Uncle, aunt, niece, nephew
  • Guardian, caregiver

Yes, regardless of your family style! You can include one kid per each insured adult on your policy for less with our Ultimate plan’s kids-included pricing. You can get this benefit if the following apply:

  • Your child is aged 17 or younger.
  • The insured adult is 18 or older.
  • Your child’s personal trip cost is the same as or under the insured adult’s trip cost.

Keep in mind: Any upgrades you add to your policy will apply an additional premium for each traveler, including kids.

Each traveler and trip are unique, so only you know what coverage is right for you. At Travelex, our best LGBTQ+ travel insurance plan is Ultimate.

Ultimate has our most inclusive coverage. It offers benefits our other plans don’t, like:

  • Kids-included pricing (great for queer parents)
  • Trip inconvenience (helpful on beach and golf trips)
  • Waiver of the pre-existing medical condition exclusion* (important if you have a chronic illness)

Plus, you can add any of our nine optional upgrades to our Ultimate plan. It’s our only plan eligible for cancel for any reason and cancel for any business reason — making it our most flexible option.

If things move from “uncomfortable” to unsafe — harassment, threats, or injuries — your Travelex coverage is here and can help financially and logistically.

Have an eligible medical emergency? We can reimburse your medical expenses and, if a doctor says it’s necessary, emergency medical evacuation to a facility that’s better equipped to treat you.

Need to cut your trip short for an eligible reason like your illness or injury? Our trip interruption benefit can help reimburse unused prepaid and nonrefundable costs.

You’re also not left to figure everything out alone. With included 24/7 travel assistance, you can call and get help. Our provider can support you with:

  • Finding local medical providers
  • Crime and contact info for local authorities
  • Coordinating your emergency medical evacuation
  • Understanding your options when you’re feeling shaken

While we can’t change local laws or attitudes, we can help ensure you have coverage and an emergency team to support you when you have to make fast decisions under pressure.

Our emergency medical coverage can only help with non-elective, urgent, and medically necessary treatment. So, we can’t offer coverage for gender-affirming care.

If you’re transitioning, our emergency medical benefit can help if:

  • You have an unexpected and urgent medical complication related to your transition.
  • You lose or run out of your prescription medications (like hormones) for your transition. Our 24/7 assistance provider can help you replace your medications on vacation so you’re not left without them.
  • You need an emergency medical evacuation to a more suitable facility. Our assistance provider can arrange and monitor your care.

Remember, if you have planned or chosen medical treatments that aren’t urgent or life-threatening, we can’t cover them. Get more details on our emergency medical coverage page.

Our pregnancy coverage doesn’t change if you’re queer! So, we can help you if you have a pregnancy complication that’s separate from and worsened by your pregnancy (like acute nephritis or cardiac decompensation).

We don’t cover routine prenatal care (check-ups or exams) or challenging pregnancy-related conditions like:

  • Morning sickness
  • False labor
  • Hyperemesis gravidarum
  • Preeclampsia

Want to know more? Visit our pregnancy travel insurance page.

Many queer couples choose to do IVF, IUI, or another fertility option outside of the U.S. where treatment may be less expensive. At Travelex, we don’t cover any planned medical care like fertility treatments — only unexpected emergencies.

You can get access to safety alerts and LGBTQ+-specific guidance in our Travel On app. These features are available to anyone with a Travelex policy.

Just search your trip destination in our app to find LGBTQ+ travel information for that location.

Name and gender marker mismatches between your passport, tickets, and insurance documents can be complicated, but with a little prep, they’re usually manageable.

Ideally, your legal travel documents, airline ticket, and insurance policy all show the same legal name and gender marker — even if they don’t fully reflect your identity yet. Keeping things consistent can help avoid questions at borders, hospitals, or when filing a Travelex claim.

If you’re in the process of changing your name or gender marker, reach out to us before buying your policy. We want to address you respectfully while keeping everything aligned with your IDs. Plus, we can tell you how we handle information updates and offer recommendations.

It’s also a good idea to carry copies of any legal change documents and a simple letter from your doctor or attorney, especially if you’re traveling to places less familiar with trans or non-binary identities.

If you have questions about Travelex claims, you can call 1-800-501-4781 for support.
