FAQs about changing your Travelex insurance policy

Want to update your travel insurance but have questions? Here’s useful information to help you edit your coverage with ease.

We want to make sure your policy works for you, so you can update many details, such as trip dates and destinations.

However, some changes may have restrictions depending on the timing or the nature of the update.

If you’re unsure about a specific change, our customer service team is always happy to provide clarity and help you make the necessary adjustments.

We’ve made it easy for you to manage many aspects of your policy online.

Here are the changes you can make online once you log in:

  • Change your travel dates.
  • Increase/decrease your trip cost per person.
  • Change your destination.
  • Change your travel supplier(s).
  • Change your address, email address, and/or phone number.
  • Cancel your policy within the review period (usually 21 days).

Here are the changes you can't make online:

  • Change an inactive policy.
  • Change your primary traveler's state of residence.
  • Add or remove optional upgrade(s).
  • Lower your trip cost less than seven days before your departure date.
  • Update your traveler name(s) and birthdate(s).
  • Changes that don’t fall within policy parameters/business rules (like a maximum trip length or cost over the plan’s limit or adding a blocked destination or blocked travel supplier).

If you’d like to adjust something on your policy and aren’t able to do it online, give us a call at 1-800-819-9004 to see if we can help.

To log in to our policy portal and make updates online, you’ll need:

  • The primary traveler's last name
  • The requestor’s full name (if you’re managing the policy for someone else)
  • The requestor’s email address
  • The requestor’s phone number

If you’re unable to log in to the policy portal or access your policy once you’re inside, simply give our customer service team a call at 1-800-819-9004. We’ll work with you to help resolve the issue and ensure you can make the changes you need.

Yes, you can update your state of residence if you move before your trip. To make this change, simply call or email our team.

Depending on the state you’re moving to, your policy benefits or premium cost may change. If this applies to you, we’ll walk you through any adjustments.

Important: We only offer Travelex coverage to individuals who live in the U.S. full-time. So, if you’re relocating internationally before your trip, your policy would no longer provide coverage, and we’d need to cancel and refund it.

Absolutely! You can update your trip dates up to the day before your scheduled departure. Keep in mind that changes to the length of your trip may impact the overall cost of your policy.

Good to know: Some policies have specific trip length limits (for example, our Advantage plan has a 30-day limit), and exceeding those limits may require additional steps. Similarly, state-specific restrictions may apply, such as a 90-day maximum trip length for Washington residents under the Ultimate plan.

If you’re unsure about how changing your trip dates could affect your policy, give us a call or send us an email so we can help.

Don’t worry — mistakes happen, and we’re here to help! If you accidentally canceled your policy, give us a call as soon as possible. If it’s the same day as the cancellation, we can usually resolve the issue and reinstate your policy.

If it’s not the same day, you’ll need to purchase a new policy. Our team can guide you through this process if you need — just give us a call and we’ll help make it as easy as possible.

No, there’s no fee to update your policy. Mistakes are easy to make, and we believe in keeping things simple and transparent.

Just remember that some changes, like increasing your trip cost, may raise your travel insurance premium cost.

Yes, you can change your beneficiaries. If it’s the same day as your policy purchase, you can call us to make the update. After that, you’ll need to email us at [email protected] with your confirmation number and the beneficiary’s full name.

In certain cases, like a spouse naming a beneficiary for both travelers or a parent naming a beneficiary for a child under 18, we can assist with these updates as well.

You can add several upgrades, like adventure activities or rental car damage, after purchasing your policy by calling our customer service team. (You can’t add these extra coverages online.) However, our cancel for any reason upgrade is unique and must be added during your initial purchase process.

If you’re interested in adding available coverage, give us a call and we’ll help you explore your options to match your policy to your needs.

You can’t remove benefits included with your travel insurance plan, but you can remove these optional upgrades from your policy up to a day before your scheduled departure date:

  • Accidental death for air travel
  • Additional medical
  • Adventure activities
  • Rental car damage
  • Pet care
  • Rental property security deposit
  • Additional baggage

Just give us a call if you’d like to remove any of these upgrades.

If you want to remove the cancel for any reason upgrade, it must be done before the departure date listed on your policy and within the review period.

You can make policy changes up to the day before your departure.

Once you start your trip, no further changes can be made — so we recommend reviewing your policy details ahead of time to check that your coverage meets your needs.

We process your policy changes instantly. You can make adjustments online or over the phone and then feel confident that your policy is immediately up to date with your change requests.

You can’t transfer your policy to another person — they’d have to purchase their own coverage. However, if you notify us at least one day before departure and haven’t filed any claims, we can modify your policy so it can be reused for a future trip. While it can’t be transferred, we’ll do our best to ensure you can still make the most of your coverage.

Yes, you can cancel your policy for a full refund within the review period, which is typically 21 days from the purchase date. Keep in mind that the day you buy the policy counts as day one.

You can cancel online during the review period. If you’re outside the review period, contact our customer service team by phone or email.

If you’re not traveling but want to keep your policy for future use, we may be able to modify the dates instead. Just let us know, and we’ll work with you to find the best solution.

If your health changes significantly before your trip, it’s important to call or email us for guidance.

If you have our Ultimate, Advantage, or Essential plan and you’re suddenly unable to travel because you’re sick or injured, you may be able to file a claim for trip cancellation if you get a physician’s note.

Mistakes happen, and we’re here to help! If you notice an error on your policy, just give us a call. We can often make corrections quickly, so your policy is accurate and ready for your trip.

Refunds for cost reductions are possible on a case-by-case basis. If the website doesn’t allow the change, you may need to call us and provide documentation showing the reduced trip cost. Our team will work with you to ensure any eligible refunds are processed smoothly.

Important: If you’re outside of the review period, you won’t be able to switch to a lower-tier plan (such as changing from Ultimate to Essential).

Yes, you can update your destination if your plans change. When purchasing a policy, you only need to list one destination, but your coverage will apply to all countries you visit during your trip (except for our blocked destinations).

If you need to make destination changes, just let us know, and we’ll help your policy reflect your updated itinerary.

Yes. Here’s what you need to know:

  • You can add travelers on the same day as your policy purchase, but not afterward. If it’s past your policy purchase date and you have the Ultimate plan, you can add a minor if there are no claims, including an infant who was born after your policy purchase date.
  • You can remove travelers within the review period. You may be able to remove travelers outside the review period with proper documentation.

To add or remove travelers, call or email us for assistance.
