Not every vacation involves a week spent lying on the beach... If you’re someone who enjoys adventure sports vacations, you’ll typically find yourself engaging in activities that are challenging, have some level of risk, and require a certain amount of fitness.

Standard travel insurance plans can cover certain activities such as hiking and snorkeling - as well as modest sports like archery - however, specific travel insurance for adventure sports is often needed to provide the extra coverage required for adrenaline junkies.

With Travelex’s Adventure Sports Coverage upgrade, activities such as heliskiing, mountain climbing, professional sports, or operating an aircraft can receive financial and medical protection. That way, should an unexpected incident occur during your adventure holiday, it doesn’t have to ruin your trip.

Why do I need adventure sports travel insurance?

Travel insurance for adventure sports can provide protection for unforeseen mishaps that could occur while on your high-octane vacation. If your next trip includes climbing glaciers in Iceland or heliskiing in the Alps, travel insurance for adventure sports can provide emergency medical expense coverage should something go wrong. Additionally, travel insurance can provide emergency evacuation coverage, which would be incredibly beneficial should you ever require a helivac off a mountain and to the hospital. Travel insurance also can provide protection in the event your sports equipment is delayed. Whether your surfboard doesn’t arrive at the beach, your golf clubs miss your tee time, or your skis don’t make it to the mountain, you can receive reimbursement for the cost of rentals or replacement gear. Travel insurance can also provide reimbursement if any of your equipment is lost, damaged, or stolen while on your trip.

Which Travelex plan is best for my adventure sports trip?

If you plan to take a trip that includes extreme sports or activities, the best option for you is the Travel Select plan. The Travel Select plan on its own includes coverage for emergency medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation, lost and stolen valuable items - including sports equipment - trip delays and cancellations, and more. In addition to providing comprehensive base level coverage, Travel Select can include the Adventure Sports Coverage upgrade as well as the Additional Medical Coverage upgrade. Travel Select also provides 24/7 access to an expert travel assistance team. The travel assistance team can help arrange medical transportation to a medical facility, procure medical prescriptions, provide emergency cash transfers, and more.

Travel Select upgrades

The Travel Select plan can include five optional upgrades. Each upgrade offers unique benefits and premiums, however, the Adventure Sports Coverage upgrade and the Additional Medical Coverage upgrade are best to include on an adventure trip. The Adventure Sports Coverage upgrade can provide protection for extreme sports and activities that wouldn’t otherwise be included in your base insurance plan. This way, if you intend on participating in activities that include mountain climbing, learning to fly a plane, or being in a helicopter, you are adequately covered. If you opt to also include the Additional Medical Coverage upgrade as part of your Travel Select policy, you can receive a maximum of $100,000 in medical expense coverage as well as up to $1 million in coverage for emergency evacuations. Having additional medical coverage can be incredibly helpful in the event you sprain your ankle while biking in a remote location or while surfing at a hidden beach and need immediate medical transport to a local hospital.
