Maui and Hawaii Wildfires

Travelex Insurance Event FAQ

On Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023, strong winds from Hurricane Dora exacerbated wildfires, causing damage to the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Hawaii. The fires have caused devastation throughout the islands, impacting tourism. Travelex Insurance Services Inc. is here for our travelers whose travel plans have been affected by the wildfires.

For coverage to apply, the insured must have purchased a travel insurance plan before the foreseeability date of Aug. 08, 2023. Please read below to understand what benefits you may be eligible for¹.

Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption

Most of our travel protection plans include trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage when a destination is uninhabitable or inaccessible².

“Uninhabitable” refers to structural and safety hazards, such as architectural instability or debris at the location or lack of basic public service, such as electricity, gas, sewer service, or water, thus creating an environment unsuitable for human occupancy.

“Inaccessible” refers to the inability to reach the scheduled destination by the original mode of transportation.

Example

If your Hawaiian destination meets one or more of the above qualifications. You may be eligible for reimbursement for prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs up to the amount insured on your policy.

Trip Delay

Most of our plans include coverage for reasonable additional expenses, such as meals, local transportation, and accommodations, provided you experience a five-hour¹ (minimum) delay.

Examples

If you are currently traveling to or from your Hawaiian destination, and your trip has been delayed due to the wildfires. You may be eligible for reimbursement up to the benefit amount limit listed on your policy.

Medical Expense and Evacuation

Some Travelex plans include coverage for unforeseen illnesses and injuries, prompting emergency medical attention during a trip.

Examples

If you are currently on your Hawaiian trip and have been injured due to the wildfires or correlating destruction. You may be eligible for reimbursement for medical expenses, such as hospital fees, ambulance services, and physician care.

If you have been injured and require an emergency medical evacuation, such as a helicopter or air ambulance transfer to an adequate facility. Your plan may offer reimbursement for medical transportation services to safely remove you from the island so you can get the help you need¹.

Travel Assistance Services

Most Travelex plans include 24/7 travel assistance services to protect travelers from a variety of problems. From flight rebooking and urgent message relay to family to medical transportation coordination and advanced hospital payments, our team is here to help you.
