Travel insurance for Thailand trips

Travel insurance was once a requirement for tourists traveling to Thailand, but it is no longer mandatory. However, while you’re exploring the wonders that Thailand’s scenic landscape holds, it helps to have the assistance of travel specialists that travel insurance provides. The possibility always exists that your journey may not proceed as expected, and in the event of unexpected incidents, travel insurance coverage can reimburse you for unforeseen expenses.

Before you leave for your vacation in Thailand, you may want to see if the U.S. Department of State posted any travel alerts for Thailand on its travel advisories website.

Important: Travelex offers coverage for damage to rental cars, but coverage for motorcycles and mopeds is not provided. This means if you’re riding a motorcycle or moped as the driver or passenger (including taxis), you will not be covered for any incidents that occur.

But before you bungee jump or zip-line through the jungle, it’s smart to check that your travel insurance policy provides coverage for the adventure activities you intend to try in Thailand.

Your planned adventure activities may already be eligible for coverage under Travelex’s Travel Select and Travel Basic plans, such as scuba diving up to a depth of 60 ft, kayaking, river rafting, snorkeling, horseback and elephant riding, and hiking.

However, if you have other extreme sports in mind that are not included in the base plans – like skydiving, zip-lining, and mountaineering – the adventure sports upgrade may be a beneficial addition to your Travel Select policy.

The reality of vacation planning is you can't always predict what may happen.

If you’re booking a journey to Thailand, you might want to think about adding the cancel for any reason upgrade to your Travelex travel insurance policy. This upgrade, which is exclusively available on the Travel Select plan, gives you the freedom to cancel your trip for any reason up to 48 hours before your planned departure. It provides a safety net, as Travelex can refund you up to 75% of your covered trip expenses (capped at $7,500), preventing you from bearing the full financial burden.

To qualify for reimbursement with the optional cancel for any reason upgrade, it's essential that you insure all non-refundable vacation expenses (up to a limit of $10,000) with your policy at the point of purchase, and your trip duration should not exceed 30 days. The cancel for any reason upgrade also needs to be bought at the same time as your initial base plan and within 15 days of making the first payment for your journey.

If you’re planning to visit multiple countries on your trip, you can get coverage for multiple destinations if you list your destination as the location you will be in for the majority of your trip.

For instance, if you plan a vacation where you will visit Thailand for seven days and Cambodia for three days, you should list Thailand as your destination.

Please note: Your Travelex travel insurance policy will not offer coverage while you are in any country that is designated a sanctioned destination.

Did you know that your pre-existing medical condition may not be covered under some travel insurance plans? You may feel unsettled by the thought as your pre-existing medical condition could present challenges during your Thailand trip. As long as you meet these criteria, Travelex travel insurance for Thailand can include your pre-existing medical condition in your policy:

• You buy the Travel Select plan within 15 days of your first vacation cost, which is considered the “early purchase window”; 

• Your Travel Select plan has enough coverage for the nonrefundable expenses and deposits you have made for your trip when you first paid for it;

• If you make any additional purchases for your trip, you include them in your travel insurance policy coverage within 15 days of the subsequent purchase; and

• All individuals covered under the policy are healthy enough to travel when the policy is purchased.

If you use coverage for a pre-existing medical condition related to a canceled or interrupted trip, the coverage will not be more than $50,000, or 100% of the insured trip expenses.

Your credit card may offer minimal travel insurance, but acquiring coverage from a travel insurance provider like Travelex means you may have broader benefits with higher limits. Travel insurance through a credit card may also have mandatory requirements before coverage can be applied.
