Another Travel Adventure

Traveling Light-er

Aug 07, 2012

My husband Frank and I have been loving our retirement! We are spending the time touring the globe as often as we can. Of course Frank would be just as happy in his recliner yelling at the weatherman, so I plan the trips and he carries the luggage. Since our near-disaster with almost missing our retirement cruise, I make sure to purchase travel insurance coverage before our trips just in case. We must be the unluckiest travelers out there because it rescued us once again.

We were heading on a dream tour of Europe. 4 countries in 2 weeks with stops in 6 cities all by rail! On the second day Frank noticed that one of our bags had left our train when we had not. Wouldn’t you know it; that was the bag that had our video camera, my necklaces and Frank’s good suit. Was he upset with that though?? No, he was mad they made off with what he calls his “best sweats”. Honest to goodness, someone could steal the glasses off his nose and he wouldn’t notice. Once his 15 year old sweatpants go missing though….. CALL INTERPOL!!!

So while he grumbled in our stateroom, I filed a quick report with the train conductor. It’s a good thing too. Turns out we needed that report for our travel coverage to help out.

The rest of our travels went off without a hitch. Frank even found a new pair of “best sweats” at a marketplace in Barcelona. He doesn’t know the language, but when it comes to haggling over pennies people understand him just fine. To this day, he’s still bragging about the $2 he saved; while I saved us a few hundred with the travel insurance, but do you think he noticed?? I just congratulate him on his haggling, and look forward to spending that money on our next adventure (South America in May… shhhh don’t tell him).

It really gets me riled up when I hear that people have luggage stolen on vacation. I mean, who wants to deal with something like that when you should be relaxing and having a good time?! I'm so glad you purchased travel insurance coverage ahead of time so we were able to help you out.

Great job filing that report with the train conductor; it's written documentation like that from the responsible party that we need over here to get your claim going for you. If you're like me, you don't save receipts for everything you own so we don't ask for that when it's time to make a claim. However, we would need something telling us about the theft or we couldn't verify that anything was taken. Once we have that, our claims department would work with you to help with your reimbursement for the stolen items. You could even get back money if someone used a stolen credit card.

Good for you for enjoying the rest of your trip! I know that could sour some people to the idea of traveling to new and adventurous places, but it sounds like you are ready to forge ahead as long as you have travel insurance working with you. Next time, keep your necklaces with Frank's sweats. Sounds like he won't be letting those babies out of his sight. There couldn't be a safer place!!
