Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?

Aug 07, 2012

I just don't know what to do and I need your help. I was going to take Frank to Mexico for a two week tour, but now I'm not sure if I should. The other day a government alert was put out to be careful about kidnappings!!

Of course Frank's not concerned. They'd probably only get about a nickel for him and wouldn't waste their time, but I'd be a real catch! We were going to visit Acapulco and then take two days to see the Mayan ruins in Chiapas. I tell you, Frank complained the whole way to Machu Picchu but once he got there he was like a little kid running around trying to see everything at once.

I've heard some scary stories about what's happening down there! If I change my mind about going, would the travel insurance kick in so I'm not paying to sit in my living room? I'm still leaning towards making the trip because they say the tourist areas aren't affected. I'm just concerned about the bus trip from Acapulco down to Chiapas. It's a long ride and who knows what we might encounter. If something changes in my adventurous spirit and I'm too nervous to do this, what would I do?

Well that is certainly a big concern you have. Although, I'm not sure a kidnapper would be able to handle you!! We've been hearing from a lot of people with those concerns recently. The situation in Mexico, unrest in Greece, and uprisings in Egypt, have people second-guessing the plans they are making.

It sounds to me like you're on the fence about whether to book the trip or not. Well, let me make it a little easier for you. I know that for your last few trips you and Frank have purchased travel insurance policies and they have certainly paid off for you two. If you were to purchase the same trip insurance coverage, we would have you protected for all of the same things that you were before; medical insurance, flight cancellation, trip interruption – all of that would be included. However, with that level of insurance you would not be reimbursed if you cancelled because of nerves. But don't despair; there is a solution to your unique situation!

Many travel insurance plans have optional upgrades which provide coverage for unique situations. I would recommend looking for the upgrade that allows you to cancel for any reason, and adding it on to your travel insurance plans. This way you have the same protection as before (with higher pay outs in some cases) and like it says you can cancel no matter what the reason is. Make sure you check the required cancellation time frame to receive reimbursement. If you're feeling nervous and decide it'll be best to not go, you can decide against it and the trip insurance will reimburse you a portion of your trip cost. You'll be able to recover most of your initial investment and won't feel like you've just paid for Frank to watch The Bowling Network at home. That protection costs a little more of course, but this is your best bet if you are having second thoughts. Just don't tell your husband that you can cancel for any reason. From what it sounds like, he'd cancel if he had a nap planned that day.
