Another Travel Adventure

A Friend of Mildred's Car Was Hit

Aug 07, 2012

Well it seems that since I've had so much experience dealing with travel insurance issues that I've developed a bit of a reputation for being an "expert" among my bridge group. Any time any of the ladies are heading away on a trip they come to me with questions. Well a good friend needs to cancel her trip and I need to find out if she's covered under her trip insurance to cancel it.

Gerty bought her trip insurance the same week that she and her husband booked their flights to Germany. They were supposed to be heading to Germany to see their grandkids this morning. Her son is stationed there and she has not seen them in months. It seems that she's going to have to wait a little longer. On the way to the airport (which is about an hour from us) she was in a car accident. Thank goodness nobody was hurt. But her car won't run, she missed her flight today and has no way to get to the airport tomorrow. It looks like she needs to cancel her trip. Her car insurance is taking care of the car damage, but what about her flights and the hotel she paid for? Is she covered for that?

Well you're just a travel insurance expert!! I think it's hysterical and awesome that you're the "go-to" person when your friends need trip insurance advice; especially when it's international travel. It can be tough being taken care of when you don't understand the language.

It's definitely a good thing that you and your group are protecting the trip investments they make. Let her know that she would likely be able to cancel her trip because of the car accident. Many travel insurance plans cover traffic accidents that keep you from going away, as long as the accident happened on the way to the departure. Some travel insurance plans even have delay benefits which may help if you miss your departure due to other transportation related delays. Not that they need it in this situation, but now you know another thing to keep being the expert. Missed departure and delayed departure benefits are examples of the different ways that travel insurance plans can provide a sense of security for travelers.
