Miss Mildred’s Family Reunion

Aug 07, 2012

My son just doesn't know what to do. We are having a family reunion at my sister's ranch in New Mexico in 4 months. Everyone is flying in for a week. We all haven't gotten together in 4 years and my son is on the fence about booking his tickets. It's bad enough that he doesn't call, but now he thinks he's getting out of this too? Not on my watch.

The problem is that the company he's worked at for six years now is talking about lay offs. The economy has hit his industry pretty badly and he's sure they are going to start letting people go. I keep telling him that he's going to be fine and not to worry about it. Who would fire a handsome boy like that? He just doesn't want to listen to logic and so he doesn't want to spend the money on the trip just in case he is let go and can't afford it anymore. I'm sure that he's going to get through it just fine. He's one of the senior people there and he's such a hard worker. If he bought travel insurance for the trip, would it cover him if he was laid off and had to cancel? I need to ease his mind so he'll just buy the ticket and get out there.

I tell you, if my sisters get all of their families in and some of mine don't show I'll never hear the end of it! Please give me some good news!

I think I have just the solution for your son. He won't be getting off the hook that easily!

Since your son has been working for his company for more than a year, our travel insurance will cover him just in case he is laid off and needs to cancel (let's hope not). The exception would be if he was an independent contractor, temporary worker or self-employed. If he hadn't been working for a year or more we wouldn't be able to do anything for him, but as you mentioned, six years is more than enough. He'd be able to cancel and recover his investment, so long as he purchases the insurance before it became foreseen that they were laying him off. Not to mention all of the great trip insurance benefits he'd have while he was away. The medical coverage, the benefits for delays or lost luggage would all be at his fingertips. He could even take advantage of our concierge service to help him getting show tickets, tee times and general information about what to do while he's in New Mexico.

So I'll cross my fingers for your son that he doesn't lose his job. For now, make sure you let him know that he should start planning for the trip right away.
