Mildred and Frank's Vacation Disaster

Aug 07, 2012

Have I ever told you about why Frank and I started to buy travel insurance? I'm not sure that I did. Well, let me just say that Frank and I had to have the roof collapse around us before we realized we should have bought it!

Well, not literally, but if we had been going on vacation 1 week earlier it just might have. Now you know us, and you know that I love to travel and Frank loves following me wherever I take him. He was however thrilled when he found out that I had booked us a vacation to New Zealand. We had such a great vacation planned. We were to start off in Christchurch and then head up the coast where we'd cross over Cook Straight to Wellington.

We were supposed to leave a few days after Christmas, but two days before they were hit with a BIG earthquake!!

We didn't know what to do! Of course our first thought was with the people affected. We watched the news and although it wasn't the worst earthquake, it was significant enough to cause a lot of damage. We received an email from our prepaid hotel letting us know that it was damaged badly for guests and we couldn't check in. The tour company also called and cancelled our reservations. Flights in and out of Christchurch were questionable at best.

We didn't have any travel insurance for the trip. We were stuck! All of the money we put down was lost. Eventually we recovered some of the money we spent on airline tickets, but not all of it. Now, any time we book a trip, I purchase trip insurance right away.

Oh my! I remember that earthquake. I can't believe you two were almost there when it happened! Well, I should believe it I guess. You two somehow attract disaster! That really stinks that you lost all of your deposits, but I'm glad that you learned a valuable lesson. If you had purchased comprehensive travel insurance from a reputable company at the time, your losses may not have been so great.

Considering the number of earthquakes and hurricanes recently, I'm glad travel insurance plans now have coverage for them. I'm sorry that you had to learn the hard way, but I'm so happy that you and Frank have had so many adventures since then and didn't let that experience leave a bad taste in your mouth for traveling!

Some Travelex plans will allow travelers to recoup 100% of their travel investment if the hotel or surrounding areas are affected by a natural disaster. Covered disasters include earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes.

If you had been covered by the correct Travelex plan (which I know you will be from now on because you two always go prepared) your hotel deposit and tour costs may not have been lost.
