Frank's Back Injury

Aug 07, 2012

Well goodness! At this point I thought I was the travel insurance expert in the family, but it looks like my daughter has taught me a bit of a lesson. She had to cancel a weekend trip that she and her husband were going to go on and I'm afraid it was all my fault. Well, in actuality, it was my husband Frank's fault more than mine.

We were going to have my beautiful granddaughter over for the entire weekend! I was so excited! I had it all planned out. We were going to be doing so many activities together. We were going to go to the zoo, the park, to get ice cream and so on. So when Frank hurt his back I was terribly disappointed. The knucklehead decided he would try to move my old hutch from our porch to the living room. I tell you, the thing weighs a ton. But did he want to wait until our son was in town? No! He tries to lift it and his back went right out. I nearly dropped dead myself just trying to get the old geezer into the car to take him to the hospital. Now he's in bed for 2 weeks and I need to take care of him completely. I don't get to have my little granddaughter for the weekend since I have to take care of him. Not that doing everything for him is that much of a change!

The problem for my daughter was that we are the only caretakers for her baby. Since it was pretty last minute she tried a bunch of other options, but nobody was able to step in for us and she had to cancel her trip. I felt terrible about that. Luckily I had told her to buy travel insurance like we always do. I didn't mean for her to get it for something like this obviously, but for the "other" stuff; in case she was delayed, or got sick while she was away. Well, it turns out that she was more on top of the trip insurance than I even thought! She looked into the possibility of not having child care in case of an emergency. I guess she knows us pretty well! I guess someone recommended that she add something to her plan that would cover her trip if any caregivers got sick or hurt. She bought the additional coverage and it looks like she's going to be able to get back all of the money she spent and will be able to take the trip another time! How wonderful! When she re-books this trip I'm going to put Frank into a padded cell to make sure nothing happens to him. Not that I'm concerned with what happens to his old bones, I'm just not going to miss my weekend with that beautiful baby again!

Oh poor Frank. That sounds like it's pretty awful. I had a friend whose back went out and he was laid up for months. And poor you! I'm sure you were SO excited to have a weekend with that little munchkin!

Well it's a good thing that your daughter looked into the travel insurance while she was mapping out her trip, because it comes up pretty frequently that people can't travel when the babysitters can't come through because of medical reasons. I'm especially happy that she added the upgrade with caregiver coverage. If she hadn't, she might have lost her entire investment! With the Travelex Lifestyle Pak added on, she's able to cancel the trip if any caregiver becomes sick or injured before she was scheduled to leave. Since she had it, she's definitely eligible to use the trip insurance in this situation.

If she had gone away and then suddenly the caregiver was injured or got sick while she was away, that add-on would pay for additional transportation costs to get her back home. She would also be reimbursed for the portion of her trip that she missed due to having to return home. When the little kiddo gets bigger the add-on is great for traveling families. It offers coverage for traveling students, protects against sports competition delays due to weather and even has some coverage added for traveling pets!

It's really a good thing that she educated herself about travel insurance booking a trip. I hope Frank feels better soon. Give him my best wishes. When you do get your weekend with your granddaughter, take loads of pictures!
