Cruising Along with Travelex

Aug 07, 2012

Sometimes I think I'd be better off just leaving him behind. My husband and I are finally on board our luxurious retirement cruise. We're relaxing by the pool on our way to the third stop on our itinerary. Had it been up to Frank though, we'd still be shivering in the cold grey winter of our hometown, wishing we had some way to re-claim our vacation. Since I do all the planning, I made sure we had travel insurance just in case something like this happened. And of course, something like this did.

We were supposed to be in Miami Friday morning when our cruise was leaving port. I booked our flights to arrive down there on Thursday, giving us plenty of time to get on the ship early and have a few hours touring the boat before we shoved off. Unfortunately, a storm rolled through the country and our flight was cancelled until morning. If I hadn't bought our travel insurance policies in advance, we'd be sunk (haha). We had to stay at an airport hotel for the night, which was fine because the travel coverage takes care of that because the airline cancelled. The big problem was that the ship was leaving for Bermuda at 10 am and we would be landing at 9:50 am! Unless we had a parachute, we had no way to get on the boat.

Frank was ready to give up, the useless lump. He was actually calling one of our kids to come pick us up!! I, on the other hand, called the travel insurance assistance hotline, and they booked us a quick flight over to Bermuda that would get us there hours ahead of the ship. My husband nearly had a heart attack when I handed them my credit card (the cheapskate). Since he never read the travel insurance plan (of course) he didn't know we'd get the money back for catching up to the boat. So it turns out that we had more time in Bermuda than we would have if we were on the ship to begin with!

Now we're on the ship and I'm glad the bad weather didn't cause us to cancel completely. Thank goodness I'm the one making the plans for us. Frank would never have thought to purchase travel insurance and we would have missed all these great times. Now he'd better learn to be a better bridge partner. I love him to death, but if we lose one more time to that couple from Daytona, I'm putting him on a lifeboat and continuing this trip solo.

Way to go! You had me nervous for Frank for a second there. I hope his bridge game improved and he stayed on the ship with you.

I'm glad you had the missed cruise connection on your travel insurance plan to make sure you were protected! If you had taken Frank's cavalier attitude you're right that you would have been home, or you would have been losing a good chunk of your spending money just trying to catch the ship. But you were right! Many travel insurance plans offer coverage which can help in situations where you miss your cruise connection; this plan offers reimbursement help for extra hotel stays and meals you need to pick up because of that delay.

It's a good thing you didn't need to use the full cancellation, but if you had missed more than 50% of the trip then we would have reimbursed you for the full cancellation. And if that had happened, by the sound of things, that money should have gone directly to you. You could have let Frank shovel the snow to your car for your spa weekend instead!
