Another Travel Adventure

My Hero Frank

Aug 06, 2012

Ok, I have to give it to Frank this time. For as useless as he can be around the house, my husband can be great when I'm in trouble and I need him. Last month I surprised him with a trip to South America so we could see Machu Picchu and other archeological sites (he's not much into history so I told him Machu Picchu was a golf course). Most of our travels so far have been tame compared to what this one had to offer. We're no spring chickens, and knew that it could be dangerous to go into the mountains of Peru. Before we left we had a doctor give us check-ups and took long walks after dinner to get prepared. I also bought travel insurance because I was pretty sure our health insurance didn't cover South America.

Well, our trip was going great. We got some small headaches from the altitude, but nothing terrible. Then as we were touring the ruins, I suddenly had terrible pain on the right side of my stomach. This was worse than when Frank cooked that halibut last August. Turns out I had appendicitis and I really didn't know what to do. Suddenly Frank took charge! I was shocked! Usually it's a big deal if the man can dress himself in the mornings.

He got a medic over to look after me and called the number of our travel insurance which helped us find a local hospital. We were so far from anywhere that we would have been completely lost if we had to find a hospital on our own. They not only found a hospital to send me to, but they even made sure we had an ambulance waiting when we got down the mountain. It was one less thing to have to worry about and Frank was able to stay by my side the whole time. By the way, don't tell Frank, but I was really scared and having him next to me meant the world.

Eventually I had to be sent to another hospital for surgery and the travel insurance coordinated the ambulance and a flight to Corpus Christi, Texas as well. Now I'm home resting and feeling much better. We lost some days of our trip, but the main thing is that Frank didn't lose me because we had help finding the right places to get to. If we didn't have that travel coverage, he'd be eating hot dogs and crackers every day without me. Luckily we'll be hitting the road again soon. My Frank sure doesn't look like much most of the time, but these days he's my hero.

Oh I'm SO GLAD you're feeling better. We love to hear about your trips over here. Your adventures are always bringing a smile to my face and I wouldn't know what I'd do with myself if I thought more weren't coming in.

Frank definitely made the right choice to call the travel insurance company. I've had people tell me that it came in handy in the middle of a big city, but it's especially useful to travelers in remote areas like Peru. What could be worse than trying to find a good hospital when you're actually in need of one? I'm so glad they were able to find a good facility and get you there.

Did you make sure to add the days you missed to your claim? Some travel insurance coverage may cover you for days you had to cut out of the trip. I know you and Frank don't want the deposits you put down just disappearing on you.

Thank Frank for me. I'm looking forward to hearing about your next trip. This time maybe take it easy. Maybe a nice beach to reward Frank? I know one that serves crackers and hot dogs!!
